Let me say a few things. First, this issue does not affect me in the least. I do not visit the spa while on board, so I could care less if they have an auto gratuity. With that being said, I think Disney is missing the boat on this and many issues recently.

Basically, many people who book cruises do so because it is a way to minimize stress involved in a vacation. You simply pick a week, show up at the port, and you are pampered for a week. No cooking, no cleaning, no driving. You are fed, entertained, taken from port to port, have a place to drop off the kids, etc. The point is that you want to do as little thinking as possible and have every little last bit of stress removed from your mind.

In as much as possible, I like the cruise experience to be as fully inclusive as the cruise company can make it. DCL is not a low cost cruise line. As such, this and several other issues (I.e. the concierge tip issue), just simply add stress to the guests. DCL should have considered another tact and simply made their prices for the spa as "all inclusive" (tipping is not required and will not be accepted). The semantics of a "gratuity" really leave no other interpretation except that it should be left to the discretion of the patron.

For what this is worth, I am rapidly reconsidering sailing DCL anytime soon. I do not want to have to think about anything when I am away from work. There are so, so many great places to go and other cruise lines to try, that maybe I am tiring a little from the whole DCL mentality recently.

In my world , an automatic tip still needs to be earned. If its not, someone will hear about it. If I leave a low tip or no tip on my own, no one knows whether I had bad service or just an a low/no tipper. If the service is so bad that I wouldn't otherwise tip much or at all, now a manager will know that something is going wrong.

I know not everyone wants to deal with something like this on vacation but I truly believe this can help make everyone's experience better. If you aren't comfortable with using the spa services with this change, that's ok. I also think the other tips on the cruise will become mandatory as well, unless very few people are actually having them removed or lowered without providing feedback.

Great point! Having it truly all inclusive is a fantastic idea.

I just really dislike the idea of mandatory surcharges being called 'gratuities'. It has become pervasive.

My disclaimer is that none of this affects me, because I have a wonderful MT that I see every other week for 90 min. for the last 10+ years and an equally wonderful pedicurist/waxer that became one of my close friends. I just go to them before I leave and after I return, so I don't go on the cruise.

I do this for a couple of reasons, both of which I think apply here. One, the cruise will be more expensive (which I think we all know). The second, though, is because when you get a spa treatment onboard, you are not establishing a relationship with the person. You have no idea what you're going to get, and probably will never see that person again (at least for awhile). I think this has a lot to do with the auto-gratuity debate here -- that spa employees have much less of an incentive to provide quality services if their gratuity is included no matter what. And I think that really rubs people the wrong way. Obviously, I keep going back to my peeps because they do a fantastic job and I know what to expect.

That being said, DH got a personal trainer on the EBTA a few weeks ago, and found that anything tipped on the account was split between the entire spa, but that cash was not. I thought that was really odd. I get the idea of splitting within a work group (e.g., all bar/servers in Diversions or Sessions, fitness crew, spa staff, etc.), but not amongst groups. Why should they split tips with people they never work with or that don't help each other out on the floor or in a venue? Weird.

I understand everyone's frustration on this topic. I didn't like it when DCL went to pre-paid automatic gratuities. I always tip what is suggested, even at WDW, but there is something about being told that DCL will automatically put the charge on. I know I can adjust it but...

I go to a spa to get manicures/pedicures regularly. When I started there, gratuity was at the discretion of the customer. Then they changed the policy so that an automatic gratuity of 18 percent was added to every bill. You could do more but not less. As distressing as this is, I think DCL is just doing what is done in the marketplace--be that good or bad. It wouldn't stop me from getting services from the spa, but it will save me 2 percent since I usually tip 20 percent.
