Thanks for everybodies input. It sounds like I would enjoy staying on the ship rather than the beaches. The idea of having a quite day on ship sounds great. Plus the kids love the clubs. Trying to find the right cruise for our
25th in a few years.

We are planning to stay on the ship in Nassau. With only 3 nights on-board, we want to make the most of our ship time. We'll probably go to the spa, relax at the pool, explore the ship, etc. It's our fake "sea day."

Having said that, you probably are going to Castaway right? That's probably the most fun 'private' beach you will find on that trip?

But do your research. We had two beach days in a row and loved it! We got the most out of our 3 day trip for sure.
Hi! Do you mind telling me more about this excursion? Or linking me to a post about it if you already made one? I am planning to book this for us and am wondering about best times to book, how far the distances are, etc. Also, after the excursion can you hang out on the beach there? Is there a beach there? That's free? Ideally I would like to do the dolphin excursion, have a little beach time, and spend a little time walking around the market area, possibly eating some conch fritters. Is there enough time for all this??? Any help/thoughts would be great!

Yup. Book the 9:30 which means you go to the theater no later than 9:30. Everyone is loaded on to the ferry at the same time, so very secure. Need key card and ID, I suggest a lanyard holder. Its a nice ferry ride in the channel (bathrooms on board) prob about 35-40 min. Then you are at the island. Wow! Were were speechless when we got there. And a dolphin swam right up to say hello right away so a great start. We were the first excursion, parties of 8 or 10. It was great. Afterwards we went to the gift shop to get shirts that said I Kissed A Sea Lion and then it was time for lunch! Our encounter package didn't include lunch but it was fine. We split amazing conk fritters and fish and beans n rice and there was plenty! Fritters were $7 so not ridiculous. We ordered tropical drinks too. Mine was a giant banana concoction they made for me! Than it was to the reef for snorkeling but if you aren't very experienced, you might hold off snokrling until Castaway since you have to climb over jagged rocks to get to it! But the reef side on the other side of the pavillion was nearly deserted and beautiful whereas the lagoon is like a fun beach party of all ages on the 4th of July. That pic of the hammocks is next to the drink hut . lots of beautiful hammocks. You can relax and play all day. There is a floating water slide park for $15 and paddle boats etc too for rent. We had a great day. Ferries go back at 1pm, 2pm and last one is 4pm. Be advised, it drops you off in front of the strawmarket which was perfect for us since we needed to shop but you don't have a security escort like we did off the ship when you first get on. You can shop by the pier like we did if you want or you can follow that sidewalk right to the bright colored secure cruise terminal and you can shop in there too or just get back on. The island itself we felt very very secure on. Only watched our belongings for other tourists. In the city, you should stay in busy places and keep your wits. Like any city! We had a great time. Got a bag with Ariel on it from the strawmarket with my name on it! Such a great day. Rum cakes from Tortuga shop too. Wow followed by a pirate party night. Sighhhhhhhhssss it just can't get any better.... Wish you the best!

What about the return? Are there options for return rides back to Nassau? Like, can we stay an hour, get tired and decide to catch the next ferry?

stay on the ship

I was in Nassau this March with another cruise line and we didnt enjoy it that much. The place looks dirty and there we lots of people trying to sell you things or braid your hair, pushy type. It was really annoying. I did make a trip to Starbuks, went thru the shops and then went to Cable Beach (didnt know you were supposed to buy a day pass and we almost got kicked off but the guy let us stay!) I wouldnt go again if I'm taking children especially. We have our first Disney cruise 4/2014 and a stop in Naussau, we are getting off to take a pic by the Bahamas sign and then will be getting off to enjoy the ship. I dont buy excursions as they are so expensive! Either way I hope you enjoy!

My Momma is disabled, uses a wheelchair and has no interest in Naussa. I have a bad back (Degenerative Disc) and bad knees also have no interest. My husband might change his mind and go, but atm has no interest, says he saw much better whilst in the Navy.

We feel the same way. We would love to do the Atlantis water park, but it would cost about $1000 for the family. This is our first cruise, and it is only 3 days, so we want to explore the ship. We have been to Freeport twice..done the straw markets, had daughter's hair braided, etc.

If you really want to do Atlantis, look into booking a room (or rooms as it appears you have more than 4 people in your party) at the Comfort Suites Paradise Island. You get full access to the water park at Atlantis for up to 4 people per room. All you do is walk off the ship, catch a cab for about $4/person, check in/check out at the same time (if you want to) and they will give you a slip of paper. Walk to the Atlantis and exchange it for armbands and you're good to go. We got 2 rooms for about $350 in August, but rates depend on the time of year.

I just have bad memories of Nassau from my childhood- my brother was hit by a speed boat then the driver, who was a cruise ship worker by the way, (watching a skier and sitting on the edge) got "Dizzy" and fell off the boat. The boat roared into short (over brother) spun around 3 times and started back out to sea. Luckily brother survived and I saw a lot of Nassau then while he was in the hospital (which at the time (1964?) only had a roof on half the building.

So I stay on board

why is this? For safety, boring, what?
When my wife and I take our Disney Dream Cruise this year we will be staying on board at Nassau. Not because we think it will be boring or unsafe; but because we have been there three times on previous cruises.

We have never been on the Disney Dream and because it is only a four night cruise we want as much time to explore that we can get. If we could swing it we would do a back to back to have more time on the ship.

If you have never been to Nassau I recommend getting off the ship and explore on foot if you don't want to do an excursion. Our first time at Nassau we did an excursion that toured the city. We found it very interesting. The other two times we just explored on foot.
