We recently took a long road trip to Tennessee with DS 2.5 years old. We have a tablet mount that hooks on the back of the seat and we loaded a ton of movies and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episodes on our iPad. The movies went a long way! Totally agree with making your stops count. We let him run all around the rest areas and once stopped at a McDonald's with a Playplace and that was a godsend that particular point in the trip!! I also got him a hard plastic tray table from Amazon that strapped onto his car seat so he could roll his toy cars around on it or use his Color Wonder markers to color. He also likes looking at books so I picked up some new ones for him to keep it interesting. Plus lots of snacks and juice!

Wanted to add...if you don't want to picnic every meal stop at a grocery store and pick up some chicken
& potato salad from the deli. Or order "to go" from Cracker Barrel and take it to the next rest area to eat. Breaks up the boredom of too many sandwiches.
