RCI just posted this on FB:

We have assessed the damage to Grandeur of the Seas and have made the decision to cancel the remainder of this voyage. We are currently arranging flights for all guests onboard to return to Baltimore, Maryland tomorrow. Guests on this sailing will receive a full refund of the cruise fare as well as a future cruise certificate. Information about upcoming sailings onboard Grandeur of the Seas will be posted as soon as it is available.

Royal Caribbean International Statement

May 27, 2013

On Monday, May 27, at approximately 2:50 a.m. ET, Grandeur of the Seas experienced a fire on the mooring area of deck 3. The fire has since been extinguished.

In an abundance of caution, the Captain deemed it necessary to muster all guests at their assembly stations. All 2,224 guests and 796 crew have been accounted for, and there have been no injuries of guests or crew reported. The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority, and we will continue to focus on their needs and concerns.

Grandeur of the Seas was enroute to CocoCay, Bahamas, but is currently heading to Freeport, Bahamas, for further evaluation. The ship is in calm seas, and has full power.

Grandeur of the Seas is currently on a seven-night sailing that departed Baltimore, Maryland, on May 24, and includes port calls to Port Canaveral, Florida; CocoCay and Nassau, Bahamas. For more information regarding the Friday, May 24, sailing of Grandeur of the Seas call 1-866- 562- 7625
My local news station had this at the crack of dawn (Freeport is almost due east of us, and it was one of our Coast Guard stations that responded), and they reported a Class A fire - wood and other conbustable solids, no fuel or other dangerous chemicals.

As to Carnival - actually, post-fire, their ship, the Sensation, was nearby and put on alert in case evacuation was needed.

As evidenced by this news and other info, bad things can happen to anyone, and anyone can have a good side!

Looking at the limited photos..............and we cannot really see what if any damages have extending beyond the stern decks.....But with all that said, its not beyond the possibility that she could be given permission to sail with only the aft lounge windows covered over. The would be class's call to give permission and then RCCL would have to look at the numbers and when a yard was available to do the work.

The outer steel work shell is not deformed. The steel I can see deformed is relatively light.

A good deal would ride on how bad the interior systems, wiring, plumbing etc. were damaged.

The number of lost cruises could be minimized and give the yard the time to get at the repair items and parts together to thereby, minimize actual yard time.

Remember the Triumph is in Freeport and we don't know just how backed up the yard is! Not to mention, if I am not mistaken Carnival Inc. owns the Freeport Yard.

YES..........I know there is a lot of maybes and could bes in this statement, but I have seen and been on ships that sailed with similar damages.

...I guess smoking cigaretts disgarded improperly ignighting the gear oil and wooden structures on the mooring deck. Oh and I also believe it was Mr. Plum in the parlor with a candle stick......

PS I have amended my position on Carnival some.........right now I would sail on the Sunshine and the Triumph, when she comes out of the yard. They are likely 2 of the safest cruise ships afloat right now!

Hey old friend,

I've just returned from 17 days off the grid in Cuba and imagine my surprise to see this Seriously, I think the Sunshine will be great, I'm just about to head over to Cruise Critic to read feedback on the first cruises after refurb.

Glad nobody was hurt on the RCCL ship; at the end of the day, that's all that matters! I'm happy the new ships are being built with better fire (and redundancy) systems.

According to Bloomberg reports RCCL is not in any better financial shape.

We thought coming off of a disaster within weeks of our Carnival that it would make them extra vigilant to check things for all the other ships sailing. At least that was my husbands explanation when people inferred we might get stranded at sea. While our immediate cruise week was mechanically OK, the very same ship did have to fly back passengers a mere week and a half after we got off. WAY too close cutting it for me.

This Grandeur had a huge overhaul dry dock about a year ago. Any idea yet of what caused the fire? It seems to me that smoking on a ship at all is risky from a flame aspect but that is conjecture....
