Hi, Magdalene! Saw your link on Rosie's TR - excited to read from the beginning. I usually join late and rarely post, but decided it was time to come out of lurkdome.

What a nice long vacation! The upper deck on the flight over was a great way to begin the trip.

Sure, teach me to go to the mountains when you post a new TR! Looking forward to hearing all about the trip! (I just got my 3rd week of vacation this year as it is my 5th year at my company...I'll get a 4th week when I hit 10 years)

Hallo

I am in! Love that you are from Germany! I took 5 years of German in high school/college. Unfortunately I lost about all of it! I did go to Germany in college though. We went to Munchen, Heidelburg, Koln, and Hamburg. It was awesome. Definitely my favorite country I have ever been to.

You know, even if you have 6 weeks, it does feel like it isn't enough...

And I have to admit, that at the moment I find it dificult to actually take the time off and besided these three weeks I might end up not taking any other vacatio for the rest of the year. The good thing is that I can transfer unused vacation days into the next year, but I then still need to find time to take them...

Hi Laura and

I think on the transatlantic routes all airlines serve food. Just imagine how trashed the planes would be if everyone would carry on food to sustain them for the next 9 hours.

We have been to Nuremberg (we live in Britain). We actually drove from Calais to Hungary one summer and spent two nights at the Hilton in Nuremberg. I loved the hotel, and the city! Our friends stayed in Regensberg (spelled wrong, probably!) and loved it there too! My dad's colleague visits Nuremberg frequently to drive cars, funny, haha.

Your aero plane food looks rather nice! Our last flight to Florida was with American Airlines and the food was dreadful. We are flying with British Airways this time so I am hoping it will be better.

Looking forward to reading more!

Meg! The last time I flew BA was in 2003, but I really liked their food then. Hope they are still good! I really like flying BA; but unfortunately they do not offer flights from Nuremberg anymore.

Calais to Hungary is quite a drive! But I am happy to hear that you liked your stop here in Nuremberg. I really love living here as it is a decent size city which still is not overwhelming. And it is pretty! I always love taking guests on a walking tour and watch them being amazed at how pretty it is. If it had not been for the war (the old city was actually 90% destroyed in an air raid in February 1945) it would be even prettier. Before the war Nuremberg had the nickname of "Germany's Jewel Box"...

Regensburg is a beautiful place, too. Especially interesting as it was a Roman settlement and part of the city wall is actually still from Roman times.

I have always felt bad for those in the US having little holiday time. We spoke to a man at WDW who only had two weeks off a year. How terrible! I was horrified. That must make it impossible to take more than a weeks holiday at a time. (Not sure about Germany but it is common here for families to take two weeks off in the summer and go abroad to Europe or the US. We couldn't function without our two week holiday!!! )

I looked it up, it is from the 2003 Working Time Directive, but I am pretty sure that there was a predecessor which was already in place in the 90s.

Hi Christine! Yes, I was so happy to get a place on the upper deck, it made the whole flight so much nicer!

Hallo Rachel!

Thank you for the nice comment about Germany! I am sure if you had a reason to dig it up, you would realise that you have not lost all of your knowledge of German! So maybe you will get a chance to use it again in the future!

I sure do! I would love to do a month long European vacation, Italy, France (Disneyland Paris of course!), England, Germany... Was für ein toller Urlaub, das wäre! (I don't know German, I looked that up on Google Translate)

All caught up and inbox cleaned out....

I am always frightened of sleeping through an alarm needed for an early flight or work schedule.

And yes more often than not I wake without need that alarm.

Glad your trip across the sea had little adventure and some decent food. And who can say no to champagne??

As for vacation, right now I have 3 weeks and at 10 years ( I am at 7 ) I will get 4 weeks. However I got a rough time for taking about 4 weeks total through out last year because ours builds and will roll over up to 30 days where it then can be bought out or anything over 240 hours rolls to sick time.
I had to buy out 40 hours and that was nearly the deal tax wise as actually taking the vacation so now I am determined to keep mine from accumulating that much.

This year in fact, I am really just taking long weekends instead of a full week and well..... I don't like it.

I wish I could just take 2 weeks off but even though the closest I came was to couple it with a conference ( work related) to total about 12 days away from the office, I really got the vibe that I shouldn't do that.

Look forward to hearing all about the beach, the cruise and of course Kidani ( and OKW)

Hi Magdalene!

I'm here! Better late than never! That's what happens when you go away for a long weekend. So excited on reading your TR! Sounds like you had a fantastic time. Thanks for sharing...my friend

YES Nuremberg is VERY pretty! But then again ALL of Germany is pretty.
Can't wait to come back next summer... We need to explore more not just Nuremberg but the surrounding area as well...
