I have had really exceptionally fun and good cruises on Carnival, that's all I have cruised for years until this year, and I've only done one DCL. Thing is, my family and entertainment style was much more exceeded with Disney, as was Castaway (in all my Carnivals, their island wasn't on the itinerary but it doesn't matter as much because Roatan to me was as good as hawaii.)

I have been told for years that once you cruise Celebrity or Disney, that you are pretty much spoiled. I have to agree. Maybe once I do a bunch of Disney back to back, I'll be 'over that' too, but I am DEFINITELY Carnivaled out...

and it's not just what I make of them. I'm a very happy sunny person! I just dont want to drop my conditioner throughout my shower, turn away from thong-wearing dancers, or pay lots of money on drinks. I would have been very happy if they would have filled up our water after swimming in salty ocean all day. Not a complainer. The last two were just not good. And they aren't THAT CHEAP that they are so cheap that they can do whatever. (Like when you get a $40 hotwire that is just eh. Hey at least it was $40!) They are very cliche. Disney is too but at least it's family style cliche...

Have yet to do a 7 day so maybe if I can, it'll be a better comparison. The 3 Day Dream blew my mind. Evidently some think that I don't know how to have a good trip, haha, but then they don't like THEIR Disney Dream trip!

Enough said. Go on the trip, enjoy your ports. The rest is a floating hotel and casino. Is what it is. No magic there. But great ports.

Bon voyage!
Thank you for all your opinions and thoughts on CCL!

When I decided to take the kids on a cruise, I never even thought about any other cruise line except Disney, since we are a true, Disney family (APs, former CM, Disney freaks!). It was like "Wait, there are other cruise lines???" I just priced Disney, saw it was in my budget and booked.

Only after booking and reading about other cruises on this board did it even dawn on me to check another line. As expected, I could have booked with a different brand for a little less money.

However, I still would never dream of going on anything but Disney. Call me a Disney Snob, I don't care, lol! And after reading all your thoughts, man am I glad I feel how I feel and booked what I booked :-)

We are a Disney family, not a CRUISE family and I think that's the real difference. Some people just like to cruise. My kids and I? We just love DISNEY

OP, I think you've got the right attitude. This is what works for your family, I'm sure it will have it's pluses and it isn't going to be like Disney. I'm sure you'll have a great time anyway, because ultimately, a vacation is more about the people you get to spend time with and the cool places you get to see together while making memories!! Have fun!

I haven't been on the Elation but I have been on the Fascination for a 5 day- which I think is a sister ship of the Elation. They are older ships but have been renovated. I found the stateroom to be one of the smaller ones I have had - smaller than other CCL ships (I have been on CCL 3x I think - maybe 3). If you DON'T like it, I wouldn't judge all CCL by it because again, it is one of the smaller and older ships. Although it has been about 3 years since my last CCL cruise I would say that overall I was happy with CCL - especially the food and the choices at the buffet. They have a Mongolian grill and a burrito bar that is really good. It did bother me the cigarette smoke when walking past the casino, but the waiters dancing didn't bother me - the kids got a kick out of it. The shows weren't great but they weren't horrible. There is a lot of great trivia on CCL - I think more than on DCL actually.

I haven't been back to CCL since I was on DCL, but I would consider it for sure. Yes, I love DCL but I liked CCL and if I am in need of a cruising "fix" and the itinerary, timing and price was right I would definitely do CCL again. I am sure you are going to have a great time.

We have somethings we love about Carnival somethings we love about RCI and Disney. If cost were not an issue Dh and I would prefer Disney. DD almost 21 wants us to do a Carnival for her birthday. We are looking at the cruise out of Baltimore.

We have had a great time on the cruises we have been on overall(well Sandy messed up our Glory Cruise but I cannot blame Carnival for that)

We prefer Carnivals food over Disney. Dh likes to try new things and I like basic food. Our carnival servers were much better than Disneys. Even though we have picked Ourtime dining we have kept the same server and have always been happy. Disneys shows are much better than Carnivals, but I enjoy them as well.

The adult areas are great. You will have a great time you are on a CRUISE not at work.

Dh and I usually do a couples cruise in October but this year he wants to do a weekend at Disney insted.

Have fun

All I can say is that I have never been adrift without power on a DCL ship as I have been with CCL. ONLY about 5 hours (without water, electricity, food, functioning toilets, etc., etc., etc.) with a crew that didn't have a clue......

But they WERE still willing to sell alcohol with no power..................

I consider CCL the "Dollar General Store" of cruise lines. And that's probably being unkind to Dollar General.

They were generous enough to offer a 25% discount on my next CCL cruise. Yippee.

I'll never step foot on a CCL ship again. Ever.

But hey, that's just one person's opinion.............

I got a good laugh off of this (altho not for the malfunctioning part, sorry!)

OK so which one were you on that lost power? Funny about the alcohol! You'd think they be giving it out for free to keep everyone over boozed and happy!

That's the number one reason we ended up on DCL this yr. After our ship got stuck a lil over a week after we got off of it, dad knew mom would never set foot on a carnival. Never never. He was smart. He sent us an email "hey kids, I booked your mother and i on a Disney Cruise for our anniversary this yr!" Smart man! Mom is a bit of a worrier... She def wouldn't have gone on ANY carnival...

I laughed when I read a previous poster talk of the pushing of drinks on CCL. We sailed CCL last August and DCL 3 weeks ago and I felt so pushed to buy drinks in the adult pool area. I was about to scream and get rude, EVERY bar server would ask you requiring an answer every 5 minutes. One would come by and you say no and then there would be another. CCL did not bother us much, maybe they were to busy serving others.

But GEESH, if I want a drink I will flag you down, leave me alone on my Fantasy cruise especially when I am escaping the kids!

Also I found the lines on DCL more of a problem than on CCL. So I guess each cruise is different and there are always variables.

A bad day on a cruise is better than a good day at work though, so I'll keep sailing every chance I get, any line!

After a couple poeple posted that the deal I thought I got was not that great I checked the CCL website and found the rooms I got were almost $200 cheaper on Monday than what we booked on Friday. So I called CCL and they refuned $180 per cabin, so $360. Whoohoo! Thanks guys!! Plus we got $50 OBC per room. So our 5 day cruise for 2 cabins, 4 people $2200. I feel like we are getting an awesome deal. Right now a 4 day DCL for 2 cabins, 4A runs about $5k.

Anyway, we are going into this with an open mind.....and ever mindful that we didn't pay very much for the cruise. We won't sweat the small stuff. Even if power goes out for a couple of days and we are adrift we will still have fun.

As far as pushing drinks, I'm not concerned since if I'm out on deck or in a lounge, I usually have one in my hand anyway. But this reminds me of a song from the Musical "Oliver" we saw in London before our DCL Baltic cruise, "You've got to pick a pocket or two!" We were on vacation and that line became the family joke everytime we pay a tour or HOHO bus or Excursion or future garage sale items at the gift shops. We'd just wink at each other and say "Youuuuu've got to pick a pocket or two!"

Yay! I knew you could get it cheaper than that! Ha. If anything, I'm super glad for that. I knew they still had sales running. I'd still keep an eye on it as it gets closer as I think my friend did and got hers reduced a few times.

If you get it for a value, than it's an even better trip. I hope yours is as good as my previous trips. And still, while the service was lousy on the last 2, our friends and the ports were top notch and I still gained about 5 pounds on each of them, so not a complete waste! Haha. Just DCL was SOO different and magical and I was literally entertained every second of the way. But you have done MANY DCLs, so why not. (Unless like the PP who had a malfunction, you get stuck and have to bus and fly back. In which case, you won't probably die, so it'll prob be fine! haha) Really though you must come back and do a TP for us. We will 'trust' YOUR judgement.

Anyway I'm super glad you got money off! I just couldn't figure out why you were paying more than we did for 5 day vs 7 day and we were in a spa upgrade room. I'm sitting a bit happier now.

And to the PP, I never had a sea day where I could spend time in the adult section but what you say makes a LOT of sense too. In that it would be on the one place they could 'get away' with pushing the drink sales and not appear unfamily oriented... so I totally get that, and it stinks no matter WHO is trying to push it on you! I guess the diff is that CCL will peddle it EVERYWHERE vs DCL who may have focused their drink sales efforts in the adults area. If I ever get to try a 7 Day Fantasy, I'll see if they are as pushy as the others! If so, I will be placing a comment on my card so they get the point...

Carnival Sensation that sails out of Jacksonville. Seems like any of the Carnival boats that end in "....tion" have their share of issues. Maybe it's a cursed class of boat. I'm sure it was a nice boat when first launched, but had just come out of drydock a few weeks prior when we sailed her, & she was severely "Meh". Nothing (good) to write home about...............

Just order a drink and they will stop pushing. I mean, you are on vacation, right?!

For those that don't drink, ask for a glass of ice water. Or tell them you don't drink. If they come back, politely tell them, "I told you last time I don't drink, now please stop asking......if you ask me again, I'm gonna throw you over the rail!" Oh, might not want to add that last part.

You can keep checking and the price generally gets lower closer to cruise time, and they will keep giving you a credit. It's one of the really nice differences between DCL and Carnival.

Here's a website that makes it really easy to check:
http://www.cruisefish.net/

I don't know if someone already posted that info for you, because I didn't read the whole thread, not wanting to enter "The Great Debate"

I've been on the Elation. The colors are definitely bright!

Just think of the money you're saving for a nice time on the ocean and in some ports. Don't worry about the rest of it.

Ironically, I usually tip waitresses and waiters very handsome tips in lounges and clubs so they WILL come back and not leave me high and dry. ;-)

I've never had someone offer me a drink while I was holding one.

And who is Arnold?

Yes, but the minute the drink is gone, the waiter will be back to double ya.
