Just back from Eastern Fantasy Voyage: The good, bad, and ugly!

We just arrived back after our 7 day Eastern Caribbean trip on the Fantasy. Overall, I would say that this was a good trip. Here are some quick comments about the ship and voyage:

1. Remy was as good as advertised. It was spectacular and every bit as good as Victoria & Albertís.
2. Breakfast on the ship was very poor. The hash browns were particularly bad and they ran out of bananas by the end of the trip. The fruit is put on the ship at the beginning of the trip and by the end of the week, it is mostly past the ripe stage. Having breakfast in the sit-down restaurant is not really any better than eating the buffet. It all tasted the same. Everything tasted like it was sitting under a heat lamp or in a tray. The pastries that were available were very good however, and were probably the safest thing each day.
3. Lunch and dinner were much better than breakfast. Do avoid the popcorn soup. Also, for the sake of comparison, the meals at dinner were just below the top Walt Disney World restaurants in terms of quality. Iím talking about places like Yachtsman, Flying Fish, Artist Point, Citricos, etc. The main dish, like your meat or fish, would be of comparable quality to those nice places. However, it was the side dishes or accompaniments that were not at that same level. For example, we had vegetables with our meal one night and they just were nowhere near the quality that you would get from a place like those I mentioned above. The vegetables tasted like what you would get in a frozen skillet meal from the grocery store.
4. Be aware that the ports are nothing special and Phillipsburg is really a slum. We did not feel safe walking anywhere beyond the beach walkway. We were the first off the boat and got nervous walking on Front Street alone. However, our excursions were fantastic. We did the 12 meter regatta race on St. Marten, and the Water Island Bike Adventure on St. Thomas. I would highly recommend these as they are true adventures.
5. Like most have complained, the pools were pretty jam packed during the day. If you get to AquaDuck before they open, you could get right on. The line was 45 minutes by about 9:15 in the morning.
6. The shows were good and the hypnotist on our show was incredibly funny. The audience went absolutely crazy with laughter at this show. The juggler/comedians were also very good and entertaining.
7. I was shocked by the few TV stations that they offer in the room. We got three news stations beyond what Disney owns (ESPNs, ABC, Disney Channel, etc.).
8. The Navigator always seemed to underestimate the daily high temperature forecast for the upcoming day. For example, it said that our day at Castaway Cay would be 78 degrees. How could it be 78 days if it is summer and there is no rain? When the captain gave his report when we arrived there, he said it was 85 degrees at 9am. It seemed like they were trying to make the summer Caribbean seem less oppressive. Just strange.
9. My wife and I ran the 5K on Castaway Cay. As I mentioned above, it was 85 degrees at the start. Running this in the summer should probably only be attempted by experienced runners as there is no shade. I have done 6 marathons and nothing had prepared me for the conditions of this run. I finished third but almost collapsed. Because the time is so short on the island, you may want to reconsider unless you are sick of running on the ship like we were. By the time we were done and hydrated, we only had about 90 minutes to have fun before lunch.

Happy to answer any questions.

Hello fellow Ohioan, we just got off the Fantasy as well.

I agree with the condition of St Maarten. We rented a car to head over to Orient Beach. Pretty sketchy between the port and the beach.

I also got to find out where the "newly-turned-18-but-ain't-allowed-in-the-vibe" kids are hanging out... In the concierge lounge. My daughter went to the meet up the first night of the cruise and found a great group of kids, but said they just wandered the ship because there was no place they could call their own. They ended up in the concierge lounge, so maybe that's the new 18*21 club.

I felt the aft vibrations all the way up in Cabana's. Not sure how others said they didn't notice anything.

Went to all three shows with Ricky Kalmon the hypnotist, and had a chance to speak with him outside our cabin. Great guy and his shows were the highlight of our cruise (along with our Mixology class with Daniel in Skyline lounge). The class was so much fun, he organizied a second private class for our group, and then a third...good stuff!)

Yikes! Just off the same cruise; it was our 6th cruise. The Eastern is our favorite. Had no issues in the ports with safety.

Food is so subjective. The food was fine in the MDRs. A little bland, but not awful. Breakfast was not scary. I don't eat hash browns or pastries, so I can't speak to that. I had oatmeal with nuts and fresh fruit everyday, so I was happy. The fruit is the best at CC because they offer fresh cut mango & papaya there DH & I were skeptical of the popcorn soup, but tried it and loved it.

The temps were pretty mild. I live in Florida (formerly from Ohio). I know oppressive. The Navigators were pretty on. The warmest days were the 2 port days of St. Maarten & St. Thomas. There was no way it was 85 degrees at 10am on CC day. No way. And, it was overcast by lunch time.

I agree with you on the CC 5K - ran it in 2010 but now I just work out in the gym, my verandah, or deck 4 because island time is precious.

Saw Aladdin, Wishes & the juggler's family show and they were all good. The show the 1st night was terrible - I felt like it was a commercial for DCL. Why did I need a DCL commercial? I'm on the ship - don't need anyone to sell me on it already!

Had no trouble with the pools/Aquaduck - was on deck by 9am on sea days and off after lunch.

Different strokes for different folks!

We were in aft cabin 9674. Felt the vibrations mildly. Was a non-issue. Really & honestly. Can't wait for my aft cabin on my next 2 Fantasy cruises.

We felt some pretty bad vibrations in mid/fwd 10534 and I am still rocking even today. Have never had this happen and this was my 6th cruise (3rd Eastern). The ship was really rocking and rolling!

I agree with the ship movement - DD and DH felt it the first night and got a little sea sick the next AM. DD didn't "recover" until late afternoon/dinnertime (thank you Sea Bands). After that though, no more issues for us.

Another fellow Ohioian here, although long since transplanted to the land of the Mouse.....definitely agree w/ the Mixology class led by Daniel in Skyline...we did this on our 6/9 Western and it was a blast. One of our best memories of a great cruise!

We were at Remy when the boat had the most movement. A castmember told us that they need to be a certain distance away from shore before than can put out the stabilizers and that was the reason why it was so bad. Thankfully, it did not hurt our dinner.

One other comment about Remy. We had a 6pm reservation and asked if our meal could end by 8pm. They were able to meet our request with no problems. I think it helped that we were the first guests to arrive.

Silverfox92, I just checked the Weather Channel's web site and Nassau hit a high temperature of 93 on the day we were at Castaway Cay (60 miles away), so the captain's announcement of 85 at 9am does not seem that unrealistic. It was, however, 15 degrees off of the prediction from the Navigator. According to the Navigator, the temperature should never have exceeded 82 degrees the entire trip. It was 88 degrees the day we were in St. Martin. It just made me wonder if they did not want people to think it was so hot.

We also recently did the eastern on the Fantasy.
I have to say we felt totally safe at St. Marten. We did a private tour with a wonderful guide. He took our kids to feed some iguanas, stopped for pictures at different places, went to Maho Beach for lunch and plane watching, then finished off our day at Orient Beach. I would highly recommend Benard's Tours to anyone going there!
Castaway Cay was hot and humid! I ran the 5K, but I'm from south MS, so it wasn't that different than what I am used to! I just wish that stop wasn't on our last day. All I could think about was how much stuff I needed to pack up and get out of the room that night! Between that and the run, I don't think I enjoyed it as much as on previous cruises.

We were on the Fantasy on the Eastern just two weeks before you. It's funny how perceptions can be so different:

1. Remy - agree! And we only did the Remy Champagne lunch.

2. Breakfast - Disagree. We enjoyed the breakfast except for the pastries. I am not a hash brown fan, but enjoyed the Muesli as always. I also thought the variety was really good. The only truly disappointment we had was the day we ordered room service for breakfast. It was a disaster

3. Enjoyed the Popcorn soup. Very different, but not bad. Now the French Onion soup on the other hand was absolutely horrible IMO. I'm sure others probaby liked it. But that's what great about food.

4. We really enjoyed the ports on this cruise moreso than the Western or Nassau. We liked it so much, we booked it again for next summer.

5. We found the pools much less crowded than the Classic ships, especially the adult-only areas. The entire Deck 12 forward was used by adults and seemed more crowded than the actual adult pool or Satellite Falls. Even on the days we went to the kid's pools, we never had a problem finding a chair on Deck 11 or 12. We liked the view of the large screen from Deck 12. We also rarely saw a posted wait of more than 30 minutes and the actual wait was never more than 20 (based on 5 or 6 times on it with a posted wait of 30 minutes).

6. We didn't do the shows except for Aladdin and the Magician. We enjoyed both.

7. It seemed that the TV stations were expanded to us with Fox News, etc. being added. I also really liked the on-demand movies this time. Although we never watched them, there was one afternoon our youngest did as he was recovering from a sunburn.

8. I actually agree with this comment about underestimated the high temp. I thought it seemed much warmer, but again, I've been in Denver the past 5 years and 85 and humid feels like 95 here.

9. I too ran the 5-K and thought the altitude of Denver would offset the humidity and heat of CC for me. WRONG! The CC 5-K was a real challenge and I finished in my goal time, but barely! It was very hard IMO and I am used to running a lot further than 5-K each day. The runs on the ship weren't too bad except for the line of walkers blocking the runners. I wish walkers would walk the opposite direction as runners. I won't be doing the 5-K next year as I'd rather spend some time on the Beach as we don't get that out here in Denver. Although we are definitely getting the heat this summer. Today hit an all-time high record. Not just an all-time high for today, but an all-time high temp for as long as they've recorded temps here in Denver.

OMG room service. I forgot to mention that. First time in 6 cruises we ordered it. Now THAT was terrible. The first sea day, DD was sea sick, so we took her back for a nap and ordered room service for lunch. OMG. The salad nicoise was awful. Wait until DH posts the pics. The lettuce was an odd color & the tuna looked like cat food, albeit I am not sure that ANY of my 5 cats would've eaten it DH ordered a ham & cheese sandwich, and I think the bread was from 2 cruises before ours. Inedible. The Four cheese pizza was the exact opposite - VERY good. They should've been embarrassed to serve that salad & sandwich.

ETA: Agree with PP about TV & addition of more channels. Love the addition of Fox news. When DD was feeling crappy, she watched "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" on demand. She also watched classic cartoons while we were getting ready for dinner each night.

This may be a silly question but what does popcorn soup taste like? Popcorn?? Is it cold or hot?

It's hot. It's actually corn chowder served with cornbread & Caramel corn. I was initially thinking "no" - I mean, I don't like the buttered popcorn jelly belly jelly beans. Our server recommended trying it, & I thought, heck, two bites & if I don't like it, I don't like it. I was surprised with how good it was!!!
