I'm so overwhelmingly confused. Is the construction primarily based on the east side of the resort by Tahiti, or is there going to be more construction elsewhere on the resort (besides the pool and GCH)? I thought I read somewhere that there is yet another DVC building going in on the other side of the resort by Fiji (on the Grand Floridian side of the Poly). Any truth to this, Tikiman?

The one that was supposed to go in near Fiji has been scrapped. As far as we know now the only three DVC areas will be. Tahiti, Rapa Nui, and the bungalows in the water off Tahiti and Hawaii.

You're most welcome. It is super fun to try a new resort and although I didn't expect to feel as at home at the Grand as I do at the Poly, I am enjoying everything about it. The rooms feel huge and luxurious despite the wear and tear that others have mentioned. I am trying not to get too attached to anything as a refurb is starting soon, but I especially love the comfy reading chair and picture of toys and classic books. The bathroom layout is terrific, and the room has better lighting than any hotel room I have had in recent history.

I am glad to hear you are getting excited about your CR stay. It is good to have new adventures!

Currently enjoying the poly this week staying in raratonga 3rd fl w garden view rm of quiet pool. Nice scenery and indeed quiet even though next to GCH. We have a napping toddler that has had no issues sleeping. Nice large rooms and no noise from construction!

Glad you're enjoying the GF . The Poly is our favorite overall, but I do still love the GF. It's a beautiful resort with a lot to offer and the rooms are a nice size. I can't wait to see the rooms after the refurbs that are supposed to take place sometime next year. The rooms are looking a little drab, but that happens with all resorts at some time or another and even with the room conditions (i.e., worn, etc), I think the GF is still a great place to stay.

Yes, I am getting excited about the CR and I agree that it is good to have new adventures .

Is Sunset Pointe going to be non existent? I love my DVC and the Poly, asking as Sunset Pointe was our wedding location however, and I'd be sad not to visit this when we always return

Polynesian Construction

Hello all. I am new to this group. Thank you for all of the useful information. I am planning a trip to Disney the first week in April and we were scheduled to stay at the Polynesian. I am concerned with the construction, however I was going to overlook that, but now I hear the pool may be shut down. I know there is no concrete information at this time, but does anyone have any opinions on whether we should stay at the Poly or move to CR or GF? We are a family of 5 with 3 little kids who are going to want to swim.
Thanks so much.

It's personal preference, IMO, as some people don't mind going to another resort to swim, while others find it too much hassle and not worth it. I'm in the group that wouldn't find it feasible (for my family). The Poly is our favorite resort and I had a hard time not booking it for our March trip. Even though the construction wouldn't bother me in the least bit, we spend a lot of time at the pool and for us, it isn't worth it to be shuttled (or walk) over to the GF to swim. My feeling is that if I wanted to swim at that pool, I'd book that resort (which I actually did when I originally booked, then switched to the CR to try something new). I do think Disney does a very good job of accommodating their guests when construction and other things are going on at certain resorts, but for us, it isn't worth it to not be able to enjoy certain amenities of the resort we're staying at. With all of that said, with 3 little ones, I think I would go with the GF or CR and not have to deal with swimming somewhere else, especially if you will be spending a lot of time at the pool. Good luck, as I've been there and know how hard it is to make a decision.

Sadly yes. We were at the Poly a couple of weeks ago and construction has pretty much wiped out Sunset Point.

I am in a very similar situation - 2 little kids - 2 & 4 - we booked the trip and decided to stay at Poly but made some changes:

- requested the room facing quiet pool and checked the online pics of the swimming pool that will remain open

- with small kids, the small pool will be fine.

- we are going in low season hoping that crowds will not be an issue

- we scheduled our park days so in the event we want or need to escape the heat - we can go to the water park

why decided to stay?

- location, location, location --- easy access o EPCOT, MK via boat for our son, restaurants and character breakfasts.

I, too, am in a similar boat as the recent posters with little kids (pool important and location, etc.).

Our trip is Feb. 21 check-in and March 1 check-out. I've gone from POFQ (then found out pool is closed there during our trip) so switched to Poly (then found out about construction and possible pool closure) so switched to Wilderness Lodge (where things stand now) but now I'm very seriously considering switching back to Poly. I just can't get over how convenient the monorail to MK and to Epcot would be. We'll be at MK the most with our little ones of 5, 3, and 1.

Does anyone know of any updates on the potential Volcano pool closure for the dates we'll be there (Feb. 21 - Mar. 1)?

Thanks

Welcome to the Disboards!

It is a very personal decision as to whether or not you want to stay at the POLY during the construction and possible closures. Some people don't mind the upheaval, others do mind.

For what its worth, we changed to the CR for our trip this month. We loved the CR. With the unreliability of the monorail these days, it was great to be able to walk from the MK to the CR. We loved the huge, comfortable rooms and the view from the tower was amazing. Our granddaughter watched the MVMCP fireworks with us from our balcony. That was the highlight of our trip for us.

I went to visit the POLY while there and I was happy that I switched to stay at CR. The construction wasn't really that noticeable in some areas, but I would be upset if I were in a room where it was visible. Some people have to stay in these rooms where the impact is greater and we just didn't want to risk it. Also, the lobby seemed a bit shabby with stained carpets on the stairs, for example. I decided that it was probably time that the POLY was given a major overhaul. In a couple of years, when the work is finished, we will go back to the Poly again. Meanwhile, I am glad to have given it a pass for this trip.

When making the decision on where I want to stay I suggest asking "What is the worst case scenario if I choose to stay here? Will I be OK if this is what happens to me?" If the worst case scenario is something that I won't want to live with, then I change plans to somewhere that works better for us.

Construction has 3 possible negative effects: noise, inconvenience and atmosphere. These will be most evident during the daytime. If you spend the day out in the parks, the impact will be minimal. If you plan to spend a lot of time at the resort, there will be a larger impact.

There is a possibility that there will be construction such as what you are seeing now plus the themed pool will be closed and some work going on in the lobby area of the hotel. For me, that is too much disruption so I would opt to stay elsewhere during a visit to WDW for the next year or so. There are so many wonderful places to stay in WDW, you can hardly go wrong wherever you decide. We enjoy every one (and have stayed at them all, usually multiple times each).

Good luck choosing!
