Dieting Or Maintaining Your Weight In Florida

I know most of you will think I'm really sad but on my last trip to Florida in October and for my upcoming August trip I plan to remain on my Weightwatchers points maintainence program (old points system) and was wondering if anyone else does this?

I know most people diet before their holiday and tend to eat what they like while they're away but I am planning to stick to my points again this trip.

I do add a few extra in for all he walking I do and I do have the occasional treat but I've struggled with my weight for so long I don't want to undo my hard work for 3 weeks away.

It's only the last trip that I have watched what I eat mainly due to gaining at least a stone in 3 weeks when I eat what I want.

On our last trip I googled menus before we went to work out whether the restaurants I planned to go to had any diet friendly foods that I liked and The Cheesecake Factory Skinnilicious memu was a god send.

I also had breakfast in the villa, took snacks and lovely sandwiches the parks for lunch and ate out every night so i didn't feel like I was totally depriving myself!

Is anyone else as strict as I am? I've lost weight and regained it (plus a bit more) so many times before I know that if I come off the plan it's such a slippery slope and so easy to regain the 4.5 stone hat I've lost.

If anyone else has any diet tips for eating out in Florida I'd love to hear them.

Andrea )

Hi

I don't think it is sad - it is a healthy attitude to have.

I lived in Boston for 2 years and ate out virtually every night. The way I maintained my weight was to get two plates when the server brought out the food. I would then immediately send back at least half, if not two-thirds of the plate back to the kitchen. The portion sizes in the US are beyond ridiculous, so a one-third's portion was more than enough.

I also never said yes to a doggie bag because that is a slippery slope to fatsville.

Good luck and congratulations on the weight loss.

Firstly, well done on your weight loss

I am another who struggles with my weight. I was really worried last year as I'd put a lot of eaight on before we went and was really concerned that, with 3 weeks in Florida, I would pile even more on.

Although I didn't make a concerted effort to diet while we were there and I certainly didn't go without anything, I did make a couple of changes to the way that I would normally eat while we are in Florida. I shared meals with my DS, only had dessert if I really wanted it, didn't eat breakfast or had a late breakfast/early lunch. I also tried hard not to eat the additional treats like ice creams, pastries, crisps (chips) and cakes. Most importantly, even if there was food left on my plate, I stopped eating when I was full. There have been times, in the past, where I have eaten so much, I literally feel like I can't move. I definitely didn't do that this last trip.

Don't get me wrong, I certainly ate a lot but something must have worked as I only put 3lbs on in 19 days (I can normally manage that just in a weekend).

As Sarah says, you will be doing a fair amount of exercise so that will allow you to relax your eating habits a little bit.

Good luck

It is difficult when in Florida. I remember having a pizza for lunch, why? i never have pizza for lunch at home! then in the evening we were having a three course meal, i felt fat and uncomfortable. I try and have fruit and yoghurt for breakfast, followed by my usual morning coffee then at lunch i will stick with fruit and a bagel or crackers( its so hot eating loads of fruit isnt hard) In the evenings i would eat what i wanted without feeling bloated or guilty.

Well done on your weight loss and your determination to stick with it on your trip. I tend to lose weight on our FL trips even though I eat a lot more because I'm much more active. I have no tips or anything to offer, but I wish you all the best in sticking to it!

Another who has struggled with weight issues

My eating habits in FL have changed over the years and now I generally only put on a couple of lbs and I can live with that.

What I do now is either have a big breakfast and dinner or small/light breakfast, share lunch with DD and then have dinner.

I also have very few if any snacks and generally skip dessert and my main meal is enough.

I am not sure how I am going to get on with the DDP this time - think I am going to have to ignore it and just order as if OOP. The servers pushing dessert could be my weakness

I know from previous trips (apart from my last trip) that eating what I want, even with the added walking still ended up with a minimum weight win of 1 stone!

Great news for you though, you must lose weight pushing the twins around and chasing after them!

I couldn't send half back of something I'd paid for. Part of my problem is if I've paid for it it can't be wasted, I work too hard in a job I hate to give half back. I'd make my partner eat it the next day for lunch!

Good for you though!

I did relax them a little but not too much!

I fell in love with cinnamon brown sugar Belvita breakfast biscuits and had them with a bagel and jam each morning with some coffee.

A cereal bar mid morning.

Then I'd have a Walmart lunch of usually onion rolls with wafer thin turkey and salad with some cinnamon bread or a funsize chocolate bar.

Then Cheesecake Factory for tea (we went 8 times in 16 nights!) just a main of the Skinnilicious menu.

And just before bed a cup of coffee with more yummy cinnamon Belvita biscuits.

It did vary a bit but not by much!

How I wish I had a packet of cinnamon Belvita to eat now!

In the trip I gained over a stone I'd have a buffet breakfast, chicken nuggets and chips with lots of mayo then a cookie (that say on the packet they serve 2 and are around 500 calories) then a regular Cheesecake Factory meal with fries for tea (2000 cals) then a piece of cheesecake with cream to takeaway and at some point in the day there would always be chocolate!!

Thank you? You're lucky to lose weight, I'm jealous!!

Yours is quite similar to mine!

I've done the dining plan once for 2 weeks when appetisers and a tip used to be included and I had everything on offer!! Ours were mainly buffets though. I also still managed to fit in Cheesecake Factory!

You should do whatever makes you happiest. I know it's seen as the norm to go on holiday, pig out and gain weight, but I've never done that. I don't do it on purpose, but the heat decreases my appetite, and that combined with the increased activity always causes me to come home a bit smaller than when I left.

If staying 'on plan' keeps you healthy and feeling psychologically and physically good both while there and when you get home it's a no brainer.
