Of course, you have to pay dues on all the points every year but you didn't have to pay for the intial purchase of the "free" points, resulting in a $2800 savings per 20 points.

Could this be what your friends got?

After this promotion, they offered another one but it was buy 100 get 10.
Yes this is what they got

We did the tour in April

If we bought before our vacation was over they were going to give you all of Dec 2012 points in addition to 2013 points.

We decided resale was right for us so we didn't buy.

To me, this is a nice incentive......if you were going to buy direct. When they give you previous years' points you don't have to pay MFs on them so you actually start out with double points for your first stay. It spoiled us, so we had to buy more.

What UY were you going to get?

Well, give isn't the right term because they will charge you prorated MFs on the current year and if you were getting a December UY, then you'd still be in your 2012 UY anyway. So the term "give" can be a pretty persuasive sales tactic.

Buying resale and what you can afford without financing will be your best and cheapest option.

I know. Both times we bought direct we got those "extra" points. We felt like they were giving them to us. Have since figured out they "gave" us nothing we didn't pay for.....just saved the MFs on nearly a year's worth of points.

Initial purchase was in late Sept so we did owe a few months' MFs because we have a Feb UY. When we added on it was after Thanksgiving the next year. We had a bit of a mix-up and had to disregard the first set of papers. By the time everything was settled we really only owed a month's dues for those year's points. 310 BLT points that we got to use without paying most of the dues on them.

But you paid a whole lot more per point for the direct points that the member fees you didn't pay don't count for much.

This is true, if we had bought resale at an older resort. But when we bought BLT there were no resale contracts and when we added on the few resale contracts were nearly the same as we paid. No closing costs. I still feel like we saved something.
