As usual, this week has not gone as I would have liked. Let's see if I can actually get caught up now.

Yay, I caught up. Now to catch you up on what's been going on here.

I'm still not feeling the best, but it's better than it has been.

I wasn't feeling up to going to town for the groceries Mon. as planned, but was feeling better that night. The forecast for Tues. was rain, and I had been feeling worse in the mornings, so I considered going in for the groceries when Tom went to bed Mon., but Angel said she was too tired. I couldn't sleep, so I went in and woke her up about 3am, and said I'd take her to Steak & Shake for 1/2 price shakes if she went with me to get the groceries. She wasn't exactly thrilled with the idea, but finally agreed. Yes, it was crazy , but the store is practically empty overnight, and we avoided the rain.

Glad school's finally done. They had an extra week due to weather closings. Angel got all A's again this quarter. (one shy of having all A+ again too) I had emailed the superintendent and principal after last quarter, about the unearned low grade from 1st semester, and neither even bothered to reply. Angel decided to try to pursue the issue herself, and made an appointment to speak to the superintendent. (she's very shy, so this was a major undertaking for her) He still wouldn't remove the grade, but was willing to allow her to retake the class (the issue was that the teacher did not provide what she needed when she was not attending school). Further discussion with the principal pointed out that there were some potential issues with that solution that could still end up lowering her class ranking, so they offered a different solution - an online summer course. The downside to that is that we have to pay for it (and it's not cheap), and that she has to do school work during the summer, but not doing it would have a major impact on her GPA & class ranking, so we're doing it. Wish the school would have taken care of the situation when it first started last Fall. The material arrived already this week, so she'll probably start it tomorrow.

Angel's had her driving permit since Dec., and did the classroom book portion 3rd quarter. She couldn't take the classroom driving portion because of her low platelets, and will take it in the fall. The Dr. has cleared her to drive (I still don't understand why it's ok for her to drive, yet she can't take PE. ), and last weekend was the first time that it hasn't been raining, and that Tom had a Sat. off, so she had her first actual driving lesson. This is me - Tom did the teaching, and I sat in the back, and I was a total wreck. I chose to stay home when they went out again Sun.

Angel had a clinic appt. the beginning of May, and all her counts were up a little bit. Not much, but improvement of any kind is always good. Dr. decided to have her wait 6 weeks for the next appt. instead of 4, and that's hard, not knowing how her immune system is doing.

We're still battling ants. Very grateful that they seem to have stayed away while we were on the trip. They came back shortly after we returned, but in a different place in the kitchen. The bait traps worked again, but then we had ants coming in the original spot from last fall, on the other side of the kitchen. Can't know for sure, but we think we're dealing with multiple colonies. Had more coming in yet a 4th spot in the kitchen. Haven't seen any in a few days, but I haven't felt confident enough to move our food back into the cupboards yet, which has been a major inconvenience.

We found out that the National Honor Society application requires quite a bit of school activities, as well as activities outside of school, and volunteer work. Normally, that wouldn't have been a problem for her, but under the circumstances, she hasn't been involved in much at all. She volunteered to help with our library's Summer Reading Program, which started this week. She helps with crafts and other tasks every Wed. this month, from 10-4:30. It was a long day for her, she's not used to much activity.

Unbelievably, I'm still having problems with our MAW coordinator. She had told us to do something in Jan., and said we would be reimbursed for it (and I have it in writing). When we received the final information packet & expense card, that reimbursement wasn't included, so I emailed her to ask about it. She said a check would be mailed 4/3. After the trip, we still hadn't received it, so I emailed her again. No response. I waited 2 weeks, and have emailed her once a week since, and the only reply I've gotten is one automated email I got 3 weeks ago saying she'd be out of the office for 3 days. The reimbursement would really be nice, but what really irritates me is that she won't even reply to my emails, and I have been very polite all along.

Angel was invited to attend Camp COCO (children's oncology camp organization) for a week in July. It's located about 90 minutes from here, run by a school of medicine, and a nurse, tech, and the Child Life Specialist from clinic are part of the staff of Drs. & nurses that provide care. Tom and I aren't exactly comfortable with the idea, but decided to let her go. The acceptance letter was supposed to be here by the first week of June, so we're getting a little worried that maybe they didn't receive her application.

Tom's vehicle is having several major problems, and it's difficult to have it worked on with the hours that he's working.

Our area has had lots of rain, and the ground is too saturated. Areas are flooding that don't have a river or other source that is the typical cause of flooding. If you happened to see the footage of the water breaking through the college doors - that's our local community college about 16 miles from us, in the town that Tom works in. We've been fortunate that we only have had minor water in our basement. Angel had classmates that actually canoed in their yards. Tom managed to make it home on 2 different occasions before most of the roads between home & work closed down.

Sorry for such a long post, but I hadn't updated for about 2 months.

Hoping to feel well enough today to finally start the TR. We're going to post in short sections though, but will post several sections at time if we manage to have time to do so.

I want to post links on her Caringbridge page for our TR posts, but I don't want to have everyone that reads her CB page to have total access to our DIS threads, so I'm going to re-do the 1st post of this thread & re-post it without the PTR link (I know that the links are still in my signature, but it's not as obvious as having the link in the text.). Sorry for the duplication.

Hi Our little family consists of me, Christi, my wonderful husband Tom, and our 15 year old daughter Angel.

This picture is one of the ones we were able to get with H2OMama's gift.

Angel was very unexpectedly diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia (a bone marrow failure) in early 2012. The details of her diagnosis can be found in our pretrip report.

Angel's diagnosis qualified her for Make a Wish. In Dec. she made her Wish: to go on a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise on the Disney Fantasy, but our MAW chapter would only grant the Disney Dream.

There were a few problems on the trip, but overall it was wonderful.

We're looking forward to sharing all about it, but I have a feeling it will take us some time to do so. Angel took over 800 pictures on just the cruise portion of our trip , so it's going to take some time to get them organized.

Christi, Glad that you are feeling a little better. I would be upset too having to pay for an online course when the teacher is the one that fell down on the job to provide what Angel needed for to do her homework for that class. about not wanting to join Angel and Tom on her driving lessons anymore! It reminds me of my sister. My dad took her out driving and came back telling my mom that she'll have to take my sister out driving from now on. She must have scared dad pretty bad! Sorry that you still have to deal with those ants and that Tom's car is acting up. Maybe if you don't hear from the MAW coordinator that you can go to the person above her to get reimbursed? Keeping all your needs in prayer!

I love it. Sounds like me! Last time I came home from two weeks at Disney I estimated 2000 pics... When I put them on the computer there was over 3000!

And We're Off :)

There were lots of last minute things to take care of the night before the trip.

Angel's uncle came over to pick up Cutie Pie the gerbil, and we doubted she would make it until we returned home.

MAW had arranged for a limo to take us to the airport , which Angel was very excited about. The limo company called that night to confirm the arrangements. I'm glad they did, because the pick up time was 20 minutes earlier than the info the MAW coordinator sent, which gave me more reason to dread what else the MAW coordinator could have gotten wrong. Then the limo rep read our address to confirm, and it was the wrong town. It was her error though, not the coordinator's, and she had just said the destination city by mistake.

We had wanted to get to bed really early, but that didn't happen. Tom & Angel managed to get to bed at a decent time though, and Angel slept well despite thinking that she was too excited to sleep at all. It took me much longer than I expected to get the rest of my things done (Tom had offered to stay up & help, but it was stuff I needed to do myself), and I finally got to bed around 2 am. The alarm was set for 6:30 am.

Angel ready to go:

I discovered that morning that my MAW shirt was the wrong size (and of course too small instead of too big). I should have thought to verify the sizes when the wish granter gave them to us. I went ahead and wore it anyway.

The limo was right on time.

For some reason, Angel loves to ride backwards when given the chance, like on the monorail & peoplemover, and she was happy to get to ride backwards in the limo for a whole hour.

We had to laugh that the limo was so old that it had a video player in it.

I usually do online check in the day before a flight, but the MAW paper work said to check in at the airport, so I figured there must be a reason. Turns out there wasn't, and the check in kiosk was a little temperamental, which really made me panic because it seemed like it wasn't going to accept the expense card MAW gave us when I was paying the luggage fee, but it finally went through.

I understand why MAW arranged for us to be at the airport so early, but our airport is very small and doesn't really require that much time for check in & security, so we had quite awhile to wait. Being so small, it also doesn't have anything to do while waiting. On our previous trips to wdw, we usually had a direct flight to Orlando, and it was obvious that a majority of the people on the flight were also on their way to wdw. This time we had a layover in Chicago, and it felt odd not having that atmosphere of excitement that a bunch of families with little ones headed to wdw seemed to create.

Our wait time went by much quicker than we expected, and it was soon time to board the plane.

And We're Off :) (Angel's POV)

I was very excited when I woke up the morning we were leaving. We quickly got ready and I sat eagerly waiting for the limo. When it came, we took a few pictures with it, and when we got inside, I picked a seat where I could ride facing backwards. We were then on our way to the airport.

Here's a picture I took of my mom and dad in the limo:

Yay! You have started your trip report! I hope that means you are feeling a little bit better, well, hopefully you are feeling a lot better.

It sounds like the limo ride was fun, and that Angel really enjoyed it! What a great start to a MAW trip!

I can't wait to read more about your trip!

Flying the Friendly Skies

I hope it's not too confusing having us both post details of the trip. I want as much as possible to be from Angel. She would also prefer to only post pics that she took herself in her posts, which means I may post pics in my section, when the description takes place in her section that follows. If that seems confusing, just let us know & we'll try something else.

It was our first time flying with United. All of our flights on the trip were sold out. We were very thankful that the wish coordinator had gotten us seats together, because when I verified the info when she gave it to us over a month in advance, the flights were already full enough that we couldn't have changed seats even if we had wanted to.

The flight from Moline to Chicago was on a very small plane, but it was only about 30 minutes.

In Chicago, United doused us with pixie dust. Angel will tell all about it. We were very grateful for their help & generosity. We'd never been to O'Hare before, and even though I had printed out a map, I'm not sure if we would have managed to navigate to where we needed to be with enough time left to eat.

We're used to only having one or two checked luggage, and 2 or 3 items to take on the plane, but this trip we each had a checked luggage, carry on, and personal item. While we were waiting to board, I noticed that the MAW drawstring backpack Tom was using as his personal item had split open down the seam. He didn't have much in it, and there wasn't anything heavy, so it shouldn't have come apart that easily. Thankfully we hadn't lost anything. We were grateful that United had given Angel a drawstring backpack too, because Tom had planned to use the MAW one in the parks too.

The flight went well, and even though it was a longer flight than we're used to, it seemed to go by quickly.

Gift from the United Rep that met our flight:

Gift from the flight attendants:
Tshirt, sweatshirt, rollup blanket, mug, cards, game book, book about the history of flight attendants, and chip clip.
It was very nice of them to give her the gift, but I do wish they had waited until the return trip to do so, because we now had a large heavy bag to carry in addition to what we already had, and it was also difficult getting it to fit under the seat. Not to mention how to pack it for the trip home (that book was really heavy).

Angel getting a tour of the cockpit from the Pilot:

Flying the Friendly Skies (Angel's POV)

Before we knew it, we were on a plane heading to Chicago. It wasnít very long until we were at the huge Chicago airport. When we landed, there was an announcement over the planeís intercom that there was someone waiting for us! When we got off the plane, we found the person who was waiting for us and they took us to one of those carts you can ride inside an airport. It was very good that we got to ride it through the airport, because it was a long way to where we needed to board for our next flight! The person that was waiting for us also gave me a United backpack and hat and gift certificates for all of us to go get lunch at any restaurant in the airport. My dad and I both chose to get something from a Wolfgang Puck restaurant, which we would never have done if we had been paying on our own. I had an Italian Bistro sandwich, which pretty much had different types of meat and something called a zucchini tapenade, and my dad had a four cheese pesto pizza. They were both really good.

My mom is a much pickier eater, so she decided to go and get something from a McDonalds further down the terminal, and she came back with shakes for all of us, which was a very nice surprise. She also said that she passed by a giant dinosaur 'skeleton' on her way, so my dad and I walked over to see it.

After a while, it was time to start boarding. Our boarding number was called, but as we were standing in line, we were surprised to be called over to the boarding desk. One of the flight attendants came out and gave me a bag of goodies. Then, she took us right onto the plane and introduced us to the other flight attendants. I thought it was interesting that this plane had little TV screens built into the seats because I had never been on a plane that had them before. We were only able to watch the TVs until the plane took off though, because you had to pay to continue watching. During the flight, the flight attendant was coming around offering drinks and snacks to the passengers. When she came to us, she said we could pick any of the snacks from the menu as a gift from the flight crew. We chose three different snack boxes to share, with lots of interesting goodies in them. I wish I had taken a picture, but I forgot. Some of the interesting things included were hummus with chips, marinated olives, and chocolate covered blueberries. Before long, we were landing at the Orlando airport. We were told to wait until everyone else got off the plane before we could go. We found out it was because they were allowing me to go up into the cockpit and to meet the pilot. I didnít realize there were so many different switches and controls used to fly a plane! After that, we left the plane and went out to find out where we needed to go next.

I thought these clouds I saw on the flight to Orlando were neat because they looked like they were forming a hill. :
