Don't. Do. It!!!!! The Spring Vegetable Bread Pudding was BAD--REALLY BAD!

I have never been so disappointed in a favorite restuarant before! We have eaten at Kona every trip that we have taken each year during the last 10 years. This has always been our favorite place behind Ohana. First they removed my Macadamia Crusted Mahi Mahi. I was disappointed but was still able to find something I was happy with. Then, they removed the Shrimp and Scallop combo--WHY?

Now they've added a Seared Scallop plate (the only way you can get scallops, according to our waitress) which is just plain, well PLAIN. Even the discription on the menu is plain. Basically, it is scallops and plain white rice. (There is a sauce, but a very SMALL amount, think thimble-sized, that is served on the side.) Knowing I do not like rice, I substituted the Spring Vegetable Bread Pudding. Bad Mistake! The dish arrived--I wish I'd taken a picture. There were three (YES--I said THREE) silver dollar sized scallops arranged around a cupcake sized pone of the bread pudding. It was more of a Spring Vegetable Muffin than a pudding. It was so dry! The only vegetable that I could identify was some type of green stalk that resembled a scallion, but was not hollow. I'm not really sure what it was, but it was the best part of the "pudding". In fact, I wish I'd had a serving of just that vegetable, because it was pretty good. Anyway, that was the only vegetable I saw in the bread pudding. There may have been others that were chopped very fine and mixed in with the bread, but I didn't see or taste them. The actual "bread" part was unseasoned. To be honest, it tasted like day-old crusted bread that had been cubed, mixed with the vegetable, stirred with an egg (to make it stick together), and dumped in a muffin tin to bake. No seasoning AT ALL!

I am not happy, happy, happy...

Did I mention there were only THREE scallops?

To end on a positive note--The Creme' Brulee was still delish...

Like everyone else I'm excited for the updates! I've never eaten there but I'm planning to in January!

Ugh, I agree!! We were so disappointed! My crab cake appetizer was burned on the bottom and my favorite chicken was gone. The server was able to get it for me because it is still on the room service menu, but how long can I count on that? Our once can't miss restaurant is now on the skip it list!
And yes, creme brûlée was still yummy!

Can you still get sushi from Kona Island? I was thinking of getting apps at Kona and sushi from Kona Island.

I agree that the food there tends to be very plain. I ordered the chicken dish one time (almond crusted?) and it had about a teaspoon of sauce on it, plain white rice, and bland macaroni salad. I ordered it on the advice of the waiter, who raved about it. It was just so so bland.

Sushi is made in Kona where they used to make the desserts.

Does anyone knows if I dine at Kona Cafe, can I order sushi from the Kona Island Sushi bar during dinner time only?

Or If I have a lunch ADR instead, will I also be able to order sushi from the Kona Island Sushi bar?

Currently have a dinner ADR but considering to change it to lunch.

I'm not 100% sure but I heard they added the sushi to Kona's menu. Maybe someone else can confirm this.

Depends, sushi during lunch is currently a test. Not sure when it will end or even if.
Sushi is made in Kona, not the island

Lots of restaurants are now off of my list because of the recent changes:

Kona - I loved the almond/coconut encrusted chicken breast they used to have with the salad that had fruit in it

Le Cellier - they took off the hamburger on the lunch menu and now have the VERY expensive all day menu

Grand Floridian afternoon tea - it's been reported that you can no longer order a la carte items.

I don't do the DDP because it's too expensive and too much food for the day. So, I imagine the restaurants off-property are going to enjoy the increase in business they get from me - LOL!!
