My views of Aulani vs other DVC resorts in terms of the resort itself

Just thought I'd share my thoughts about Aulani from the room and resort perspective. I won't talk about excursions off the resort that you could do without staying at Aulani. It's not that it may necessarily change your decision whether to travel there or not, but having stayed at almost every DVC villa we had a lot of difference reference points to compare. I'm sure others are in the same situation.

For reference, our favorite villa for the room itself is Saratoga Springs, with our least favorite being Old Key West. We typically stay in a 1-BR for our family of five, and tend to spend a lot of time at the resort wherever we go (with the exception of eating out for dinner).

In general, yes the resort is beautiful and I won't review what many others have said about it. As a WHOLE, it is probably our favorite DVC resort from a pure resort/accomodation perspective (not including off-site recreation). However I'll focus on the specific.

What we liked:
- Decor is beautiful in the rooms. no surprise for a new resort.

- LOVED the kitchen banquet seating area.

- lots of seating areas in the lobby but also on each floor. Not sure if anyone ever uses them

- While we didn't use them, liked the idea of having a rice cooker available.

- Room had a blu-ray player instead of a DVD player. We had actually brought some of our movies from home - the community hall had DVD's only

- Pool: no surprise given how new it is. Spent most of our time just sitting by the pool and comfortable with the kids on their own. They had enough to do for an entire morning or afternoon with just the lazy river and water slides.

- The eat-in family meals were a nice deal, especially given the price to eat at restaurants. ALways had enough for leftovers.

What we didn't like:

- Too bad they couldn't fit in two bathrooms in their one-bedroom villas, like what Kidani village or BLT did. We definitely noted this with out family of 5.

- In most other villas, there is a place to hang coats/jackets near the front door. At Aulani, you have to walk past the kitchen, and towards the bedroom to access a closet. Minor inconvenience, but still odd.

- While the Murphy bed helped open up space during the days, it really did limit clothing storage space for our 3 kids who slept in the living room. That left just the drawers in the master bedroom for the 5 of us.

- Lack of restaurants: This has been mentioned before. I refused to do the buffet because of the price. We did Ama Ama - I view this like doing the Cinderella thing at Magic Kingdom - did it, won't do it again.

- Lack of outside restaurants for families: We were looking for restaurants that were not typical chain restaurants and didn't want to drive too far (e.g. Waikiki.) For some reason I was expecting what it is like in Hilton Head, with tons of nice, locally-run restaurants. We didn't do the more expensive places like Roy's (mainly because Yelp mentioned it wasn't the greatest for kids). Monkeypod was close, and while others have raved about it, it wasn't anything special. For those in Canada, it was no better than a Milestone's.

- Coffee: i refused to buy the refillable mug out of principle. You could get nice coffee in the AM (in the small bar area next to the buffet place, can't recall the name), but come the afternoon you couldn't. Really wished they could keep that place open all day. Bought some Kona Coffee from target to brew in the villa. Never seemed to turn out great, but later figured it was when we used tap water. Tasted better using bottled water.

We also did the community hall, Aunty's House, pics with characters, beach; not much to say with those. They were as good as expected, no worse and no better than similar things in other DVC resorts.

If you're wondering, YES, we would definitely go back. But with our family of 5 (kids are now 10, 8,8) here is what we would do differently:

1. We'd have to get a 2-Bedroom, mainly for the bathroom reason.
2. Either agree to drive further to eat out, or do more of those in-room family rooms. Probably the latter.
3. Definitely rent a car again.
4. Continue to be content just laying by the pool.

Feel free to shoot over any questions.

Next time you come back and stay at aulani you can try all the local places in kapolei. Have great sushi, local food, asian food, thai, pho and others. Might be different than hotel food and definitely cheaper than ama ama. It's only a five minute drive from aulani. Pm me if you want more info.

Forgot to mention we did try those in Kapolei. They were ok but they reminded me of chain restaurants located in any outlet mall complex.

Not that the food wasn't good as it was. But It wasnt better than sushi I could get back home. I was just expecting restaurants with a bit more character like there are in Hilton Head.

I always find it interesting as to what some people like and don't like. I think so much of it depends on how we use our villas. We too mostly stay in 1 bedroom villas, but it's usually with just two of us. I don't really think the 1 bedroom villas are meant to sleep 5 even though it's allowed. I also don't think they are designed to be that convenient for 5 at any of the resorts.

Anyway....I found many of your dislikes to be some of our likes.

We had 3 people in our Aulani 1 bedroom. Our adult son used the living room, and we found the split bathroom setup at Aulani to work quite well. We could still all get ready in the morning easily with two vanities. Our son kept his things in the toilet/shower room, and we kept ours in the tub room.

We too liked the seating areas at Aulani, and also thought the closet for the living room guests was on the small side. I also don't care for the stacked laundry in the kitchen. I know it's that way at lots of the DVC resorts, but I think that's one reason I like OKW so much.

Did you utilize the spa and some of the things like Starlit Hui and storyteller? We enjoyed all three of those and thought they were kind of unique to Aulani. I was impressed with how authentically Hawaiian Disney made their hula show.

Agreed to each his/her own!

Yes we did the Starlight Hui and storyteller. Granted we did the first when we were still jetlagged and getting used to the time change. They were nice, don't think we would do them again but especially since they were free they were a nice feature to have.

We really like the 1-BR at AKL and find it fits us well. The size itself of the Aulani 1-BR seems at least as big as AKL if not bigger. So given that it felt smaller, the only explanation I can think of is the lack of the 2nd bathroom. Granted my daughter is getting to the age where she is spending more time in the BR and we certainly noticed that!

Your first post struck me as fairly negative and like perhaps you shouldn't bother going back if that's how you felt. But THIS statement has me scratching my head. We haven't been to Aulani (until August) but I HAVE been to Hawaii 4 times before. How can you compare Hawaii to going to WDW? That's like comparing saltine crackers to bananas. Forget bathrooms. There's a larger destination at the end of the rainbow here. Personally I don't go on vacation for the bathrooms.

AnalAnnie: I read your post and was going to leave it as the original intent was to share my experiences in hopes that others who think the same way as me about vacations want to hear. But I feel I have to respond to you with a few comments as the tone of your reply suggests you were offended by a critical review.

1. The comment you bolded in my post was meant to say that the overall size of the 1-BR at Aulani is probably similar in size (square footage wise) to a 1-BR at AKL (not AKL itself). But we felt more constrained for some reason (i.e. waiting for someone to change or use the bathroom first etc.) at Aulani compared to AKL. Just an observation and my own personal perception.
You don't have to agree.

2. I am just sharing my opinion as someone who, bearing in mind how much I pay for DVC (not to mention cost of flights to Hawaii), places a lot of importance on how well the accommodations and resort suit the needs of me and my family. I'm sure i'm not the only person who factors this into deciding on a trip.
You don't have to agree.

3. I did say we would definitely go back despite finding some negative things which emphasizes that you can enjoy a vacation, Disney or not, even if there are negative things. Please do not question my right to have opinions and to decide whether I should go back or not. By the way if anyone is counting, I pointed out more things we liked compared to things with didn't like.
You don't have to agree.

4. You don't go on vacations for bathrooms, that's great. I don't either. I was just commenting on how MY family of 5 (not yours) found it challenging with just one bathroom and that I prefer a villa with two bathrooms. Hence I will do something different the next time WHEN I GO BACK. There are many other families of 5 out there who may be deciding what villa is best for them. Perhaps my experience can help them decide. If they are like you and don't care about bathrooms, they will ignore my post or opinion. Personally if I voluntarily put myself in a position or situation where there isn't a wait to brush my team, take a shower or use the toilet, that's generally nice.
You don't have to agree.

5. I wasn't comparing Aulani with WDW, I was comparing the Aulani resort with other DVC resort properties at WDW, HHI etc. I think it is fair to do so. Many of us on the DVC section have stayed at many DVC resorts, and I know myself I use my stays at other villas as a reference. I made the comparison with HHI as they are both non-theme-park DVC properties. Sorry if that is not allowed.
You don't have to agree.

Thank you so much for your comments. DH and I are planning a trip to Aulani in February of next year and I appreciate your input as to comparisons with other DVC resorts which we have visited, which include both at WDW and off-site.

Thank you for your post. Your comments about the bathroom were especially helpful. We are a family of 5 and I was trying to decide between the 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom and your comments helped with the decision to go ahead and use the extra points to get the second bathroom.

I realize it's Hawaii and we would be happy being in any kind of room, but think we will be more comfortable with the 2nd bathroom and bedroom.

I do agree with your comments regarding the # of bathrooms in a 1-bedroom and we haven't gotten there yet.... will be there in August. We are a family of 5 and no matter how many times I check into the DVC page, there are no 2 bedroom accommodations to be had. I am "stuck" with 2 nights in 1 1-bedroom type and 2 nights in another 1-bedroom type. I can't even get 4 consecutive nights in a 1-bedroom!

I really wanted a 2 bedroom because of the quantity of bathrooms. Two daughters plus wife really puts a strain on the bathroom time when trying to get out in the morning. One more, or even the two more bathrooms in the 2 bedroom really would have been a help.

Oh well..... 3 more months worth of checking and hoping someone cancels in a 2 bedroom... ANY VIEW!

I AGREE!!!!!

In many ways a similar assessment that we would have given.

I do agree that it would have been nice if they had 2 full bath's they did at least come up with a decent compromise. I admit to also being slightly confused by your dislike of it for 5 though since you state that SSR 1BR is your favorite accommodation. But certainly nothing wrong with wishing they could have at least kept up with what they had done in the previous 3 DVC's though (AKV, BLT and VGC). It sounds like we may be back to even less at VGF - or perhaps a similar layout to Aulani.

The restaurants - IMO it's not any different than most of Hawaii where you have to drive to get to something barring a few locations like Waikiki or Lahaina. But we enjoyed Ama Ama quite a bit and are far from considering it a one time place to eat.

With coffee - when we were there you could get coffee all day long at the sundries shop. But I heard they were taking the drink station out of there? Is it gone now? If they did then that was a poor decision IMO and DH would not have been happy.

Whoa! Hold on! Settle down! Don't get your panties in a wad! You are certainly entitled to your opinions, as am I. I don't think I ever said you weren't. I didn't bother with the bringing up the HHI part (I would never compare dining in Hawaii to HHI either but whatever.) While I've read of other people who've been disappointed with the food choices offered AT Aulani itself it seems that most people have really been very pleased with the other local offerings in the area. I think yours was the first really negative review I've read of the entire Ko'Olina area.

My opinion when I read both of your posts was that your overall experience of the resort and Hawaii was far more negative than it was positive and I thought it was really odd that you compared Aulani to AKV. We don't even own enough points to consider anything other than studios really so we just deal with living in close quarters and are happy to have the kitchenette and one bathroom (although we DO tend to prefer a split bath set-up if given a choice).

But really, we're just happy to be on vaca regardless of where it is. I fully expect that when we go to Aulani this summer we'll tend to compare it to the other resorts that we have stayed at in Hawaii on previous trips rather than to a WDW vacation or to any other DVC resorts. When we stayed at HHI & VB we didn't compare them to the WDW resorts or to the dining available at WDW - we compared them to other beach towns / resorts that we've been to... In my mind I am going to compare TYPES of vacations / locations with like types. I don't think it would be fair for us to compare HHI to WDW. They're just not the same nor are the resorts. But if you want me to compare the other DVC resort studios to the HHI studio just for fun I will say that while the kitchenette at HHI was fantastic (large) I didn't care for the bathroom because it wasn't split and I thought dining in the HH area was OK - but Hawaii is infinitely better IMO. See, I can compare saltines to bananas too!!

Carry on and enjoy whatever trips you plan. Mahalo and aloha.

I didn't dislike it - the room itself is probably my favorite now instead of SSR. To be more clear as I may not have been before, it was mainly the lack of the second bathroom that made it feel like we were on top of each other waiting to use it in the morning, evening etc. For some reason I just assumed it would have two bathrooms like the newer ones and didn't bother to check before booking. Again not a big deal, but it will affect what we book going forward.

The Ama Ama food was good, but just not $200-for-2adults-3kids good. I was expecting food quality similar to the Signature restaurants like Jiko. But it's more of a Hawaii price thing the more I hear about it.

re: coffee - you could get it in the main shop (if you had a refillable mug) but they took that down the week we were there. Again if they kept that lounge area open in the afternoon where you could get coffees, latte's, pastries (think abotu all the unique Hawaii-based desserts like haupia pie, macademia -pineapple pastries they could serve) I'm sure they would make a killing.

I hear you on the price however we would have put it up there with Jiko and the like. But restaurant food is one of the more subjective topics of all and items ordered can be a huge factor. Most restaurants have things their better at than others and it could have come down to being lucky in our selections. Our second time there we selected different desserts though we really loved what we had the first time. And as good as we thought the first ones were we then were slightly disappointed with the next ones. If that had been our first selection we might have had similar feelings as you.

I wonder if the new QS location is going to have something like the pastries and desserts? Hopefully it's going to be the second drink station location and have coffee. No coffee after the Oleo room closes will give DH a breakdown.

I realize it's Hawaii and we would be happy being in any kind of room, but think we will be more comfortable with the 2nd bathroom and bedroom.
We stayed in a dedicated 2BR OV after Thanksgiving last year. It also had a 1/2 bath with just toilet and sink. Not as good as the 3rd bathroom with a shower in VGC but it was well used with our large group.
