The funny thing is that when I first saw the MeFotos I couldn't have cared less that they were coloured. But then when I went to pick a colour, it suddenly became this big, exciting, decision.

I liked the green because it was subdued and tasteful, yet different to all the black tripods out there . A bit like the gold one which I also liked. But at the same time I think that the orange is quirky and eye-catching, and I'm sure I'll be happy with it. Just like PIO will love her purple one.

My tripod arrived on Friday.

I've only just had time to unpack it, play with it a bit and do some comparisons. And as I know how much you all appreciate comparisons....

Okay. Let's try that again.....this time with the tripod out of the box.

It's about 1/2 the size of the Cullman Magnesit!

The purple is a nice 'girly' colour; but I think I made the right choice for me. It has that right 'pop colour' without standing out too much.

At a height of up to 1.6 meters, it is a little shorter than the Cullman.

Okay....a lot shorter than the Cullman. But I would never extend the Cullman out to this height!!

I've been playing with the MeFoto tripod head. It's not bad but the controls aren't intuitive to me. I haven't yet checked to see if the Cullman head is interchangeable with the MeFoto. If not, I think I can see a Manfrotto purchase between now and September.

Otherwise, I'm a lot happier with the size of the MeFoto. I think it will nicely fit into my suitcase.

Congrats, glad you are happy with the color (or colour choice. When you have more time to play with it please gave another update. From the little bit I played with the tripod head it seemed very nicer that i expected, but also looks like it would take a little while to get use to it.

Just called my local camera store today and they got part of the order, but sadly no orange yet they are hopping to get another order in this week. Part of me wants to just order one this week, but I think I'll give them another week or two. My nieces do have a dance recital on the 19th, so I think I've made that my cut off date.

It's really overcast and cold today; otherwise I'd be tempted to take a drive to the beach and try it out for sunset shots.

We're over the major event season and the next opportunity for fireworks will be in July. I'll definitely be heading down for fireworks shooting but will keep an eye on the weather just in case the weather lines up with some free time for me to go shoot sunset. I'm going to have to get used to have the twist legs and the 5 sections; instead of the clamp/3 sections on the magnesit.

Hope your local store gets the orange in shortly.

And in case anyone is looking for reading material....

TechRadar gave me the best overview of all the models (not including the MeFoto): http://www.techradar.com/au/news/pho...tested-1046066

From Adorama: http://www.adorama.com/alc/0013051/a...-for-Travelers

About the Benro Travel Angel: http://www.thephoblographer.com/2011...gel-a-1691tb0/

If money was no object, I would get one of the Gitzo travel tripods: http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012...aveler-tripod/

Specifically about the MeFoto: http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012...el-tripod-kit/
And you can go seek Tom's review independently about the MeFoto. I tried to link and it seems like it's not Disfriendly.

Reviews of the Manfrotto 496RC2 compact ball head.

http://www.adorama.com/BG496RC2.html

I'm sure that there are a heap of other references out there; but these ones were the ones that I looked at and came back to re-read again.

I picked up the MeFoto Backpacker (green!) several weeks ago at Amazon when they had a Lighting Deal for it ($30 off). It works well for my lighter micro 4/3 camera, and I'm very happy with it. Given the prices, these MeFoto's seem to have a lot going for them!

We are going on a 17 day road trip this summer from St. Louis to California, with major stops in San Francisco Bay Area, Yosemite, Disneyland/SoCal, and Grand Canyon. (Thanks again to PrincessInOz who provided some great tips on San Francisco in a separate thread!) We'll be on the go quite a bit with three kids (in a packed vehicle), and I wanted to find a good, small, light, and affordable tripod for the trip. I think this fits the purpose perfectly.

(I also just bought a Nodal Ninja 3 panoramic head that fits nicely on the MeFoto. I've been inspired by some of the 360x180 degree Yosemite photos that I've seen. Especially the ones by Dennis Stover at http://www.dlsphoto.net/Yosemite2011...te2011Fall.htm Go click on one to see what I mean )

Thanks for sharing the link of Yosemite. Gonna go check out that Nodal Ninja panoramic head.

I can't wait to make some spherical panoramas of Fantasyland this summer!

I've done a lot of research on panoramic photos lately, and the Nodal Ninja 3 seemed to fit my camera/budget the best. I have a 7.5mm fisheye and it works really well with it. I'm still learning the stitching software (I'm using the free Hugin), but I've been able to get a perfectly smooth spherical panorama of my living room with little difficulty. The other idea is to get large panoramic photos with it from taking several vertical rows of images and then stitching them into a giant photo. This pano head is great for that too. I'm sure you could get some awesome shots in Sedona/Grand Canyon with that!! If you decide that you are interested in the Nodal Ninja's, then be sure to check out their selection of factory irregulars. I bought one and saved like $40 on it. They are supposed to have cosmetic defects (rough spot on paint or something), but their quality control for regular items must be off the charts, because I couldn't find any blemishes on the one I received

One last thought to share... I started down this path on accident. Somehow found this video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouOEM4cKKGc where they guy walks you through the whole process. The first video shows how to take the pictures and you'll see that he has a Nodal Ninja. (He shows how to take spherical panos without a pano head, but I didn't have much luck with his string method.)

I have a Nodal Ninja but haven't had a real chance to use it except in the living room. I tried PTGui but I had major problems with the fan on the ceiling and the tripod legs.

I did the same thing, and had the same troubles with the top (zenith) and floor (nadir) in my living room. I used Hugin (poor man's PTGui) and figured out how the concept of control points worked. You basically select the top picture one on one pane and then one of the horizontal photos on the other pane. You manually look for items that appear on both, like the corner of a ceiling fan blade, and then add a pair of control points (one on each matching spot). I put two or three control point pairs on several of the top/horizontal photos, and then did the same for the bottom photo. Then I clicked the "re-align" button and everything stitched together perfectly. No errors whatsoever. Admittedly, I haven't figured out how I want to go about removing the tripod from the final image, but I'll probably sink another $35 into the effort and get the Nodal Ninja Nadir adapter that allows the camera to swing out over the tripod for a second floor picture.

Hey PrincessInOz and WanderlustNZ, after a few weeks how are you liking your MeFoto Backpackers?

I'm still waiting, over 3 weeks, for the orange to come in to my local camera store. They are getting multiple shipments a week and have gotten in at least one of every color except the orange.
