Food issues

Hi, it's a bit difficult to explain but my son (6) has a speech and language disorder with some autistic traits. He is pretty high functioning though and I don't anticipate it leading to any major concerns at disney world.

My main concern is that he has some big issues with eating, especially in public. When eating in restaurants he insists on eating a hot dog (if it is on the menu) or a sandwich bought in by us. I think it is the familiarity with a certain type of food that makes him feel happy and secure!!

Because of his eating worries we are generally going to avoid table service restaurants, however we have made two ADRs - the Hoop de doo and O'hanas, chosen because they have a nice atmosphere for our children and if my son won't eat, there will be some entertainment for him.

I was just wondering if the restaurant/theatre will allow me to bring some food in for my son, or if they would cook him a hot dog if I requested it? I feel a bit cheeky doing this as he hasn't got an actual food intollerance. However it would be a shame if my son doesn't get to eat anything.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

Restaurants will not cook items that you bring in. If they serve hot dogs anywhere in the Polynesian (Kona, Captain Cook's) then they'll likely agree to bring him hot dogs at 'Ohana and if they serve hot dogs at Trail's End then they'll likely agree to bring him hot dog at HDDR. Look at the menus to find out if they have them at those locations.

Note that both the restaurants you have chosen are "all you care to eat" and you will be charged for you son even if he doesn't eat.

Kona Cafe
has hot-dogs on the menu

Note this quote on Ohana dinner menu

Not sure when your trip is but "Mickey's Backyard BBQ" would be great as Hot-dogs are on the menu.

Fort Wilderness "Chuck Wagon" has
Hot-dogs

I once worked with a child who would not drink anything but Egg Nog--his family made arrangements with a dairy to supply them weekly. He is now in his late teens and still only drinks Egg Nog but he is healthy and happy.
Have a great Holiday.

We were just at Ohana's last week. My son is a super picky eater and did not like any of Ohana's choices from the children's menu. The chef came out and offered him a few other things, one being Mickey cheese ravioli's that Kona serves. The chef was super nice and I was glad they could accomadate him.

Thanks for the info - so relieved our child has chosen to have hot dogs for his chosen food and not egg nogg!!

We originally considered Mickey's backyard BBQ but the reviews weren't as good as Hoop de doo so decided against.

Think I will just have to pay for our son in the restaurants we have chosen and if he gets a hot dog it will be a bonus but if not he'll have to just have a drink and get something to eat afterwards.
