Next time give it a try...you'll be able to rent any amount your heart desires.
Why do you call owners irresponsible when they rent their points?

I was referencing AddieAidey's message to me where she used the term "irresponsible". I certainly don't feel that way.

Anyone who goes to WDW less than twice a year and owns DVC is making a bad financial choice. Yes there are other factors to consider but for me, I'm not going to let those other factors lead me to a bad financial choice. Studio, 2 bedroom villa, etc...it doesn't matter what kind of room you select or which resort you choose. Renting points to stay in those rooms is a far better use of money then buying into DVC....unless you're going to WDW multiple times a year.
You've made your decision and I am happy for you. But please don't project your thinking or feelings onto others. Your statements above are entirely without support and are made based on having limited knowledge of individual owners or even the DVC system. You have convinced yourself of an appropriate course of action. There's no need to further convince yourself by making erroneous and unsubstantiated comments.

This. The logic of DVC not being a financially sound decision unless you go at least twice a year is seriously flawed.

Well stated! Luckily for those who have purchased, we know we made the correct decision.

And yes, we are 'one of those' who choose to go to WDW every three years. We have no regrets about being DVC owners. We are just thankful that we could truly afford to do so. The reality is that anyone who is 'on the fence' about this purchase should not buy. It's too much money whether you buy it direct or resale to spend on something you have doubts about.

Rent trade board. Here ..., I have points. . Will you transfer. I need uy x. 2012 points and 3-8 posts later i have found someone more interested in a 1 time transfer than renring and checking dates. Every time easy

I've been watching this thread with interest because my husband and I are three weeks past our tour and sales pitch of the DVC. We've spent many hours discussing, punching numbers, etc. and haven't made a final decision as to what, when or even if we will purchase. But I would certainly hope that our going to DW every other year instead of multiple times per year doesn't get us membership into the "waste of time and money club". We fully expect to save points to use from one year to another and be able to use those points to take other family members besides our two children (ages 22 and 16). The main reason we even started showing interest in DVC is because I know that I want to be able to afford to take grandchildren to DW someday and this is an option that will help my family be able to meet that goal. Am I missing another point of DVC? If so, would someone please (politely) enlighten me?

going every other year is a workable plan.

but the issue in your case might be more of "how far in advance do you plan?" DVC works "best" if you can book 11 months out. it can still work fine if you book 6-7 months out and are not very picky about where you stay. but if you like to call 2-3 months out, it might be a waste of time and money...

take some time and do some research before you get too serious about buying.

The poster said ", I was not able to rent when we went in Feb. because it wasn't available.".

Not that the points weren't there, but that the time in Feb wasn't available.

If she was trying to go around President's Day and/or the marathon, she's right. I had VWL reserved in advance, then kept thinking about changing to something else, and after a certain point there was NOTHING. Didn't matter if I had the points or could rent the points; there was no availability.

And even if there's availability for some sorts of rooms, if that room won't work for your group or your points or the money you have to rent someone else's points, then it's as good as being unavailable.

We considered renting...but I realized that I had NO interest in being at the mercy of an owner. You have no insurance that the owner is a decent person, that they are married to a decent person, that the only people on their contract are also decent. There is nothing stopping an owner from canceling your trip; not even paypal will save you, since it's against their T&C for people to rent timeshares using paypal.

And don't forget to thank the owners for making the decision to buy in when sometimes they will need to rent them out. Be glad they bought, so that you can rent!

We have three adult children with spouses and 9.3 grandchildren who all love Disney..that is enough math for me.
I always notice in these long analytical threads where people manage to find great returns on the money they would spend for DVC (it seems like interest and investment are interchanged and I have the great rate of about 1% in interest income and varying daily investment results..averages don't mean much if you happen to have to cash out at a low point..plus, why do they never add in the taxes due on the interest or investments in their calculations or not deduct the allowable part of MF?). You can go nuts with the numbers and if you analyzed every purchase like this you'd be in a very small house driving a 20 year old Toyota (and I had a 20 year old Toyota I loved and wish I kept), you'd never eat out, you'd sit in the dark with your ramen and count your money by daylight.

Very well said. I recently passes rorl and I am thrilled that we can build disney memories. I ran numbers as well and thought hard about it. We bought a small contract that will allow us to vacation for a week every other year in a 1 or 2 bedroom. In the end it's about family time and sharing it with them and this purchase allows us to do so.
