We are already the minority on the ship, so those things are noticed. With that said, I have never felt uncomfortable and the diversity of the crew really helps that. Even though times are better, there's always that thought about not being viewed in a positive light. It will never stop me, but I'm not oblivious either. To the OP, I will say that sometimes things can be racially motivated subconsciously but not racist. Some kids just gravitate to what they're used to. They're used to Cinderella and the other princesses because some may look like mommy or just because they've been around longer.

HHHMMM Very interesting...as a Puerto Rican woman I also tend to notice things like this. However, I am a Christian mother first, not a Puerto Rican woman. Christ does not see our skin color and my main concern is that my child is happy. With that said, I would never force him to stay on line for something that does not interest him (other than family portraits lol)...

Also, it's all a matter of how we approach people and situations. If I walk in to a room thinking "I'm the only Puerto Rican woman in this room" it may show in my body language or I may misinterpret what someone says or how they look at me.

When I go to WDW or DCL I may notice our physical differences but our love for Disney out-weights any differences. I see other families with the same love for Disney that we have...I see one big Disney family...

Through DisBoards we've met some pretty wonderful people on our cruises...some we consider like-family...from across the nation and even in Austria.

A cruise is a fantastic opportunity to meet various diverse groups you might not otherwise ever meet.

Say hi to everyone and chat with as many people as possible....cruises are great vacations and a great way to learn about various cultures and ethnic backgrounds without spending tens of thousands of dollars on various trips around the world!!!!!

Enjoy each other and the opportunities!!!!

We love Princess and the Frog in our house. Tiana is probably a close second to Rapunzal if my DS (7) was willing to admit he likes princesses. Maybe people didn't recognize her since she is a frog for most of the movie.

I find that the 'classic' princesses merchandise is everywhere. Little kids want to she the princess that they recognize. I would love to see Tiana, especially since we have never seen her in the parks. We have more pictures with Mulan and Pocahontas because we are unwilling to stand in long lines. A short line for Tiana would have made our day.

It's obvious you have a racial issue with Caucasians....stop denying it and simply admit it....only then will you be able to fix your internal issues with the opposite race.

Being leery of situations when you are a minority doesnt make you a racist. Even being racially motivated doesnt equate either. Treating someone differently based on your race does. A lot of black people have the same issues with good reason. Would you call a woman that knows rape victims a sexist because she doesn't automatically trust all men? The OP didn't mention anything about treating white people a certain way. She just had a concern.

This reminds me a time we were at DHS. Mulan is our favorite princess so we were meeting her and taking pictures with her. Pocahontas was standing near her and no one was trying to meet Pocahontas. Mulan said to everyone within earshot and with a sweeping hand gesture in the direction of Pocahontas: "Here is Pocahontas!" She was looking out for her friend.

We were thrilled to meet Pocahontas, too, and the glad there was no wait to do so. Our DD received a Pocahontas outfit for Christmas one year complete with the matching boots and wore that costume every day for weeks!

We love ALL the Princesses and Disney Characters and are happy to meet them all, the shorter the lines the better, but sadly, our DDs are at the age when they don't care for the interaction as much as they use to. *sniff* Still, loads of pictures and memories from when they did!!

Rape victim??? hhhmmm
In JRHS I was jumped by 3 african american girls from my school in Queens NY. They stumped on me and kicked me under a parked car while they called me names due to my race. It was a cold winter day with 2 feet of snow...I'll never forget it. Should I automatically not trust african americans because of my experience? I'm sorry, I dont agree...we see the world differently.
Those that have malice in their hearts is not because of their race.

And to make such comparisons to this thread...IDK...I'm leaving this thread.

Nice chatting with everyone...

Here is what I find the most funny about this thread.

Phychology of a child:
All the kids are over there. That must be the cool princess! I am going over there!

Physchology of an adult:
OMG! My favorite princess is FREE!!! I'm going to go get tons of pictures and we'll pose and get some awesome photos. Maybe if no one is in line behind me we can chat for a bit!

I would be estatic if my line was short and laughing at all the suckers in the long line.

Kids. Who can understand them?

You obviously missed my point. Your post illustrates one of the reasons this topic of discussion is taboo. Emotions cloud thinking. I didn't equate a rape victim to a short line. I gave an example of how history(even if it isn't your own) can affect your outlook. I never feel uncomfortable around white people, but I do notice if I'm the only black person around. The way that I live my life makes this a common occurrence. I live in a city where a disproportionate percentage of the crime is committed by young black men. That means that I have a smaller chance of a crime happening to me if I'm in a certain part of the city. A lot of the time that puts me around a lot of white people. Obviously, if I had distrust toward white people, I would stay away. But, in this case I trust them more than some people that look just like me. In closing, I will say that I have these conversations with my best friend of 20 years who is guess what? A white man who, with his family will be cruising with us next month.
And OP, please change the title.

[QUOTE=Rogillio;48017047]Me either. It always bothered me that Snow White had black hair and not a blond!

/QUOTE]

What in the world would make you think Snow White should have blond hair?

Here is a quote from my Grimm version: " Once upon a time in the middle of winter a queen sat at her window working, and her embroidery frame was of ebony. And as she worked, gazing out on the snow, she pricked her finger and there fell from it three drops of blood onto the snow. And she said to herself, 'Oh that I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood of the embroidery frame.'"

I have never read or seen a version of the story where she did not have black hair.

Snow WHITE. When I hear that name I picture a Scandanavian gal.....fair skinned and hair as white as snow.

My family and I recently had the pleasure of sailing aboard the Disney Magic. With that said, when the characters came out for pictures, the line for Princess Tiana only had about 10 people. (including our fam) However, the line for the other characters held hundreds of people. We are an African American family and my very own daughter wanted to leave Tiana's line and go to the others line. I guess she felt as though our line wasn't important, considering the other kids her age was in a different line. My wife felt extremely sorry for Tiana, but I assured her that Tiana's line was so short because she was a new character, not because of the color of her shin. (gotta keep wifey happy) Surprisingly, Tiana continued to wave and smile and seemed as though she was accustomed to the lack of attention she was given. I'm just saying
I think this boils down to not being able to and shouldn't be making decisions for our children on what they like. My daughter has red hair like Merida (no wig needed; seriously) and I thought for sure that this would be the princess (and by the way if anyone should feel put out; its this poor princess who didn't even get on any list by any previous posts in this thread) my daughter would want to be for Halloween. Guess what? Nope! Wanted to be Tinker Bell. For me, it was all about the hair. For my daughter, all about the sparkly short green dress and wings. And then I realized that it shouldn't be about me; we were doing this for her.

So, for me, whatever line my daughter wants to get in is fine by me. (though I definitely would like her to get in a shorter line/ where's the fast pass for seeing princesses?! )
