Castaway Cay 5K

Thinking of signing up for the 5k but wasn't sure how competitive it was. I recently injured myself training for a race here at home and not sure if I'll be in any condition to run but could certainly walk/jog. Do others leisurely enjoy the course? Any thought from those who have participated would be great!

Hi there. I am seeing if I can do this as a walk and light jog too. I am not a runner in any sense of the word. I am in my 60's and hoping to do this as a "dream come true" activity.
Hope you get to do it when you are on CC!

From what I've heard, it is, just like all the RunDisney 5K races, essentially an untimed fun run - usually with bling. (I know with land-based RunDisney stuff (not sure that the 5K is done by RD, but as I understand it, it's the same model) the pace requirement is a 16 minute mile, which is (at least for me) slightly slower than a brisk walk.)

The last time DH and I did the run in June 2012 people walked or ran. The course guides stay out until everyone finished just to make sure. They also suggest people watch for bikes if walking because the trail to the lookout tower will be open to them.

If you run, there is no D-tag for an official time. It's just for fun and a way to get super sweaty before jumping in the ocean!

I ran in the 5k when we were on the magic a few years back. It was great fun and you don't have to worry about it being competitive. One of the athletic cast members meets you at the dock and gives you the basic layout of the course. Then your off. I'd say it was a mix of really good runners all the way down to folks just wanting to have a nice jog. The finish line was pretty unnoficial, basically you just ran back to the boat. The nice surprise was I got a nice award 8.5x11 poster saying that I had participated in the 5k. I was really happy that I did it.

DW ran it last June. It's not competitive at all. They stress it's a "run," not a "race," and you can walk it, jog it, do whatever you want. Very laid back.

There's a multi-page thread on it--I'll see if I can find it and link to it.

Thanks everyone! Just want to make sure I won't make a fool of myself as I am not the most competitive runner, but its definitely on the list of things to do

Thinking of doing this. Do you sign up in advance or just show up somewhere to run it?

Yup, just show and get your number. I've done this a couple times and the meet is usually in one of the pubs. Great fun!

Make sure to bring your ID & key card with you to the meeting place and follow them to the start line. It was very very laid back - kids as well as adults were doing it and all sorts of abilities.

What do we do with little kids? Is there a kids club or nursery while at castaway cay? Or is the 5k early so you can leave them in nursery on the ship? I've never cruised before so maybe this is a dumb question?

I ran CC5K as my first race a few weeks ago. It is not competitive, but they do have a timer at the start/finish. You time yourself, just before you get your Mickey medal There were lots of people walking, some running and jogging, and a few running. One guy lapped me, he looked serious, but he was the only one. People were encouraging each other while running down the airline strip and at the end. It was a great first experience and I'd definitely suggest it as good post-injury event.
