Smile Tips for Porters

If you park at the terminal and the porters take care of your luggage for you, what is a standard tip? Is it based on number of bags, size of bags or just a standard tip?

Yes to all of the above. Think of what you'd tip a sky cap at the airport curb-side check-in.

We do $2-$3 per bag. We usually have a couple big suitcases & 2 or 3 medium bags, just depends on the length of cruise.

IMO the porters do much more to help if you park at the port than someone at the curb at the airport. They take all your bags to your car, and that is a greater distance now that there is the parking garage. They have always loaded the bags in the car for us while we get the kids settled. That is priceless!

I feel it is also related to the situation.

When we pulled up at PC and asked for help with a huge box out of the rental , the porter looked at me like .... really . This box was big, 2.5' cubed, weighing 40lbs min. Initially I thought he was going to say this needs to be gate checked. He seemed despondent until I handed him a 20 dollar bill. He immediately responded and helped us with all or bags. I think he was still surprised at the number of bags we had somehow tucked in the rental. They kept emerging from the vehicle. He was a pro, and handle all our 17 bags without question. We only needed two carts. We were impressed, him, not so much. After I was comfortable with the baggage assembly on the carts I gave him another $20. I believe he was then as happy as us.

I know ... lets not go there.

Ironically, we got our bags by 2:30pm on the Fantasy.

Yes , your correct we didn't need half of our belongings.

But, if something happened to the ship, we had plenty of clothes, socks, shoes, sunscreen, lipbalm, highlighters, etc, so we were safe.

We tipped on the curbside but the porter who is invaluable to you is the one at the end of the cruise. We tipped $20 and he located our 4 bags, loaded them on his cart and found us an express customs line!!! We were out of that terminal in about 10 minutes!!!

Have fun,

WOW...17 bags!!! I don't think I'd need that many pieces of luggage for the entire contents of my closet here at home!!
I've read some posts here about packing too much so we're planning to try and not take too many clothes that won't be worn! As someone said, it's not a fashion show and people are busy having fun and are not concerned with YOUR appearance!
Thanks for all the tips about the porter tips!!

I travel solo so I usually just have a carry-on bag that I keep with me, however twice I had to check a bag and I recall tipping $4 or $5 for that one bag.

A good rule of thumb is : If someone helps you with luggage, such as bus driver/skycap/porter/bellhop, it is customary to tip the person. What you tip that person depends on what you would be comfortable with, also if bag or bags are very heavy and/or big one usually tips a little more for that service.

How do you tip a porter at the curb who takes your suitcases from you to put into the big bin of suitcases at arrival? We were maybe 10 feet from the bin and walking over to put them in ourselves. The porter literally ran over and grabbed them from us.

Afternoon,

I was wondering the same thing, you get out of the car and hand over a bag which a porter paid for by DCL/Port Authority then places on a trolley, do you really need to tip them, surely they are just receiving luggage for DCL?
