Cruises ever empty?

I wonder if ships ever sail kinda empty? The thought occurred to me, because the meet up thread for our Dream cruise on May 19th is really short (5 pages versus 10 to 20) compared to the threads for the cruises scheduled for the week before and the week after. Has anyone ever sailed on a half full ship? Has DCL ever cancelled a date due to low occupancy?

I once sailed at 75% capacity. It was nice. They had the IGT/VGT rates on for about 2 mos right up until last minute. April 27 we are cruising and they have had the GT rates up for a long time now. It seems on the emptier side. Hope so!

How would you know if your ship is at capacity before sailing?

I don't think they will cancel but they will do everything they can (in the way of discounted fares) to fill up the ships more.

We were on one of the Pacific Coast Cruises. When it became obvious that they weren't going to fill up the ship, they offered the VGT/OGT/IGT rates as well as theming the cruises (they became the Pixar Cruises with special guest speakers from Pixar, new character greetings and special excursions).

After they did those things, the ship started filling up pretty quickly (at least according to our meet thread that went crazy with new activity in the last few months).

As someone who's sailed twice out of Galveston with two coming up, they offer guarantees or KSF and they fill the ship. To the point where no upgrades were available in port either cruise and my cruise the end of this month is near full as well.

There's no way to know if the ship is at capacity before sailing. There are various ways to see if cabins are available in the different categories, one is to make a pretend reservation, another is to see if there are any deals for your cruise.

There is no way to know how many people are booked into each stateroom. A sold out cruise with couples booked into the majority of the rooms will be less crowed then a sold out cruise with lots of families.

I was wondering this myself! We are cruisng at the end of August which is typically a high time for hurricanes. I was wondering if ships were typically full at that time.

We were on the Fantasy last April for its 4th cruise, 1st Eastern, and because it was just after spring breaks it was only 2/3 full (according to multiple CMs). We rarely waited in line for Aquaduck and you wouldn't believe how many empty tables there were at second dining and empty seats in the theater! And Clubs at night were quite intimate. Although I assume its rare, it does happen where you have most of the ship to yourself :-)

Be aware that that site will only tell you the percentage of categories available, not rooms. As long as 1 room in each category is available, it will show 100% availability.
