Where's the thank you? Sry, Vent.

Last night I went out to the movies. I went into the restroom and someone had left their Iphone in the stall. I did the right thing and I went to the counter and told a worker and a manager them that someone had left their phone. They were busy filling orders and I interrupted them by handing it in (how rude of me!). But the manager looks at me and back at the worker as if he was far too important to handle such matters himself. She comes over and she begrudgingly takes the phone. No thank you, no acknowledgment, no nothing.

Now, I wasn't asking for a medal or praise, but a "thanks" or "We'll take care of it" would've sufficed. Honestly, with that attitude, I was worried that the person who lost it would never see it again. That's happened plenty of times at my job, and we say, "thanks for turning it in. We will hang onto it." and put it in a drawer with other lost items. I know they were busy with spring break crowds, but there's also a lot of dishonest people who would've seized the opportunity to make a quick buck off of an Iphone 5 abandoned (esp in the neighborhood we were in lol), and it would've been nice for them to say something.

Just venting. Please and thank you is sometimes all people need. I was taught to be polite and honest, and reciprocation is appreciated!

I am sure they didn't thank you because they see this all the time. Phones get left behind everywhere these days. It would be a greater issue if the phone owner didn't thank you if you met him or her. The employees are not the phone's owner and they have no obligation to be glad that you found someone else's phone. No biggie!

I would have been irritated too. Nice of you to turn it in before someone else took it!

Can't really blame someone who is handling food and drink orders for not wanting to handle toilet stall iphone. Gross. I would have left it in the bathroom.

I found one on a stack of clothes at JCP one time, took it to the checkout counter and gave it to clerk, didn't expect a thank you or anything else but that's just me, just thought whoever lost it had a better chance of getting it back.

I really don't understand why they would be thanking you.

I don't understand why anyone would put more than a couple seconds thought into this either, but that's a different topic.

I would be irritated too. At Whole Foods I found a credit card in the parking lot. I turned it into customer service. They thanked me and said they would hold onto it.

I agree. You weren't doing them a favor or helping them. I wouldn't make a big deal out of it. Now, if the person who lost it was standing there, they should be thanking you profusely.

I agree with you that, thank you is not hard to say and should be said. I found a photo pass card at MK and handed it off to a character handler in the area and they were very nice. I thought if the person came back it would be logical to ask the handler right there. The cast member was really nice about it. Ah well that was Disney.

It's called common courtesy, good manners, whatever. An automatic thank you whenever you are handed something in this manner.

"please, thank you and you're welcome" are your friends!

Did you wait your turn in line, or at least wait for them to finish with the customer they were with? If yes, then they were disrespectful to you. If no, then you were disrespectful to the other customers and the employees.

I would be annoyed too. Maybe you weren't helping the employees out, but it's common courtesy to say thank you when someone goes out of their way to do something nice. If they don't, people may be discouraged from doing something like that again.

iPhones are worth quite a bit of money, and undeniably someone else may have taken it with them rather than hand it in. It's always nice when a person does an act of goodwill when it will not advantage them in the slightest.

My parents can't stand it when they make way for a car coming the opposite way when there's only room for one car, and the driver just glares at them or ignores them without saying 'thank you'. (raising their hand, smiling, that kind of thing).

I think it's nice when people flash at you when a speed camera is coming up. They could get fined for warning you but at least they are keeping you in mind.

It does seem odd that they didn't say thank you, and I hope the original owner got the phone back and an employee didn't just keep it.

Reminds me of the time I found a purse in a cart in the parking lot of the grocery store. I took it in and turned it over to the employee at the customer service desk. I always wondered if the owner ever got it back.

That's what I meant in my op. I don't think I was being rude by not waiting in line to hand in the phone. I wasn't like, "here's someone's phone. Can I get a popcorn?" I work in customer service too and thank you goes a long way. I was just surprised because when someone does something nice, you say thank you. I wasn't looking for praise or for dissection of the experience. Just a notice of a lack of common courtesy. I just hope the person got their phone back.
