We always make reservations ahead of time for every day we are there (1 each day at different restaurants ). Then if we decide we don't want to eat there at that time I cancel the reservation. Most of the time I don't cancel, because special arrangements are made for DD's food allergy. But when we do cancel I do it several hours before the meal. Never had a problem.

I don't know why they told you that. I have made noon lunch reservations at 10 a.m. same day.

I don't why they would have told you that either, I too have made reservations for the same day with no issues at all. We've also changed a reservation time the same day with no issues at all.

You were given bad information unless you were calling about Napa Rose. It is the only Disney restaurant I know of that you ever call direct, and there you always call direct, and you can get same day reservations, if they are available.

Yes, this is also my experience (and we've eaten at character meals outside of DL visits when in Southern California on a last minute whim more than once).

I would make them in advance but keep things flexible. This thread talks about it:

I've made day of reservations too. Booked in advance for our must do's but once we were sitting in our room at GCH and felt like lunch. Called and made a booking for carnation cafe in about half an hours time. We just got ready and strolled into the park, straight up to the check in podium, seated straight away, whilst there was a massive long walk up line. I chuckled to myself thinking if they just walked up to guest services and made a booking they would probably get in faster.

I agree with the others, definitely book places like Blue Bayou that you know you want to eat at, but don't rule out last minute decisions at other times.
