Dining reservations in parks?

I am experienced with needing to make advanced reservations at WDW to get into a good restaurant at a good time. With the generally poor opinion of the DL dining plan, are advanced reservations as necessary in DL and DCA? I would like a little flexibility if possible ( ie making reservations the night before) but will make them in advance if you think it necessary. Thanks!

General consensus is that you can easily get a reservation within a week of your preferred date. Some get reservations the day before they want to dine.

If you are interested in eating at the very popular restaurants (ex: Blue Bayou), I would suggest booking a reservation. Most places you don't need one, but the more popular ones, it will make your life easier. Where were you thinking of eating, specifically.

I am going in October. I was thinking about the one in POC and the V8 in DCA and the Blue Bayou. Perhaps I should go ahead and reserve?

Blue Bayou IS the restaurant in POTC. Flos is counter service, so no reservation needed.
If you have ideas of where you want to eat, I would get a reservation in advance to avoid any excessive waits.
The thing with DL is that you don't have to be waiting on the phone for your 60 day window to come. You can get most days/times a few weeks out...especially during low season.

You can also program the Disney Dining reservation number in your phone, in case you decide day-of that you'd like to eat somewhere. At least, I recall someone here once seeing a long line at Cafe Orleans and calling to get a reservation that would get her in maybe an hour later!

October can be rather busy if you happen to hit during fall breaks. I'd definitely recommend you make a reservation for the Blue Bayou regardless, and if you're going around mid-October, I'd make a reservation for any other sit-down restaurant you'd be disappointed to miss. You can always change it if needed, as long as there's another slot open.

Have a great trip!

Has this changed? Last March I called and tried to make dining reservations through the DLR central reservations line and was told you can not do it the day of - you have to call at least one day ahead - otherwise if it's same day you have to call the restaurant directly.

Book them 60 days out, this way you get the exact time you want...just don't forget to write it down!

Or you can email them - that way you can have the email on your phone when you get there. I like that confirmation type stuff and always bring it with me.

Like Girimama said, Blue Bayou is the restaurant in PotC and Flo's V8 Cafe is CS so no reservations needed or taken.

You can't call the restaurants, you have to call Disney Dining, I've called them the day of the made reservations without a problem.
Alternately you can email dine@disneyland.com to make a reservation.

OP I always suggest reservations, we've been turned away from restaurants that were booked. Places I always recommend a reservation, Blue Bayou, Cafe Orleans, Carnation Cafe, Ariel's Grotto. We've been able to walk up but in the BB instance it was pouring rain and the parks were pretty much deserted, CO we had to wait almost an hour and CC we could have waited but didn't, the wait there was 90 minutes. AG we have been able to walk up but we had to eat outside, in decent weather that is never a problem but if it was cold, wet, rainy or too hot we can't do that. lol

That is interesting, as I am not making this up - this is what they told me when I called - can't make same day reservations - anyway, I'd do it ahead of time just in case.

I have been calling for years day of for reservations. Our last trip, I called at 830am for 930am breakfast at Carnation Cafe.

BUT - You cannot call for day of reservations for locations outside the park ie ESPN, Tortilla Joes, Naples, etc...
