On the Dream Choose 5E Gty or 8A Gty?

Which would you choose? Presently have an 8E Gty booked, but now I see that that 5E Gty is also available for our sailing for only a $72 diff.

We normally book 5A, but this is a short cruise and I wanted to do something a little different. I booked the 8E because I have always wanted to sail in a cabin with the huge portholes, but I also think the oversized verandahs might be interessting.

Any suggestions, comments, recommendations or first hand experience that anyone would like to share?

Edited to add that my TA has informed me that I actually have an 8A GTY booked at this time. I guess we talked about an 8E, but decided on an 8A, how embarassing. Does that make any difference in anyones response?

I would choose the 5E, I have sailed on the Dream twice with a 5E room (10662 & 10664) and will be sailing in 10662 on the Fantasy this September. I love having the extra large verandah and it is beautiful when the ship backs into CC!!

I have found the 5E category to be the true hidden gem of the Dream Class ships. If you know you may have a little down time while on the cruise, it is truly enjoyable to be able to sit back and relax on the oversized verandah. Plus, you will be the envy of others.

Are there any 5E cabins on the Dream that are preferable or any you really don't want to have?

Well any of the ones at the back of the ship are premium, but the other 5E category cabins are on deck 5, either forward or aft. We had a GTY for a 5E once and ended up forward on deck 5 and really enjoyed the location of the cabin.

Whenever we book, we always check 5E first and weigh our options.

We recently booked a 5E GTY in hopes of getting an oversized veranda but wound up being "upgraded" to a 5B, which is a normal-sized veranda right by the stairs/elevators. I wasn't too happy with the upgrade (and personally, I don't see it as an upgrade), but that's always a possibility with GTY.

We have done 10662 & 10664 on the Dream all the way aft. 10664 is almost in the middle of the aft end of the ship. We love being on the aft end backing into CC and being very close to the (often less crowded) aft elevators and you are just one deck down from cabanas so getting there is easy just walk up one deck and you are there. We also watched the Fireworks from our Verandah (i know it is a no no but we just happened to be out there when they shot them off)

Next time, put a "do not upgrade" request on your reservation. It's just a request, but then you are less likely to be moved. I would not find it an upgrade either.

To the OP, I'd pick the 5E for a $72 difference!!!

I'm not sure, but I believe the oversized verandahs on the Dream are category 4E. I'm not sure what 5E will get you :-)

Yes, my mistake. These are on deck 6 and higher and mostly aft? Someone earlier mentioned deck 5, and I think those are 4E. Maybe. ;-)

I know some folks have the deck plans memorized, but I don't know the ships well enough, so I have to rely on the descriptions and the help of folks here on the DIS.

I have found a good site for looking at deck plans though, here is a link to cabins on the Wonder:

All the darker blue cabins in the picture are 5E's on the Dream on deck 5.
