St. John Island Tour for an 8 year old - yes or no?

I remember my parents dragging me around on tours and such when I was younger. Would this be fun for my 8 year old DS or not? Thanks!

It really depends on the child. Last summer our boys were 12 and 14 when we took this tour. You take a ferry to the island. Our trip was very choppy and they had to pass out bags because passengers were becoming ill. On the island you take an open air taxi. There are a few stops along the way. If your child wants to go the beach, they will get jealous because we saw some beaches during our ride. We stopped at one point and looked down at the beautiful Caribbean Sea lapping up at an equally beautiful beach. We stopped at an old sugar plantation. We saw huge termite nests. Our guide had a lot of interesting tidbits to share about the island. Our family enjoyed it, but then, again, we knew we had other days to experience the beach.

My son was 8 on our first cruise. I didn't take the St John tour until I went on a cruise with just some other "mom" friends. We enjoyed it, but it wasn't really what I'd call "fun". It was a lot of scenery and stops for photo ops.
I think my son, at 8, would have been bored silly, and he wasn't really a very rambunctious kid.

We did a St. Thomas Island Tour so I can't answer directly to St. John's tour, but we have a 7 and 4 year old we took along and they were fine. THere were a lot of stops so that kept them interested or at least content and not complaining!

I have an 8YO wouldn't even dream of going all the way to St. John and NOT going to the beach!! Most of St. John is US national Park. The beaches are some of the best in the world. I would not be sitting on a tour bus when you can be walking/snorkling/playing on the MOST pristine beaches ever!! I'd say for sure take a trip over to St. John but make sure it involves one of the beaches. Trunk Bay has an amazing snorkel path great for kids that age. My son did it when he was 5 and still remembers it well. Have fun!!

You could do the St. John Eco Hike. Not far from where you get off the ferry is where the hike starts. It was about 1 mile. Our youngest was 7 and did fine. At the end of the hike we got to spend time at Honeymoon Beach.

Thank you for your replies everyone! I was leaning towards canceling the tour and after reading your comments, it just confirms what I was thinking. I could do these types of tours all day long (I love seeing new places!), but I need to make sure DS is having a good time. If the tour was an hour or 2 we'd probably do it, but it's a little on the long side and we wouldn't have much opportunity to do anything else. Plus we've never been to St. Thomas anyways, so it might be best to save St. John for another trip. Thanks again for helping me with this decision
