Gag me. My husband and i are DVC members with no children. we have witnessed on more than one occasion toddlers and kids even smaller than that playing in the hot tubs that have on diapers and worse: NO CLOTHES AT ALL!!!!!

Hot tubs are unsafe for children under a certain age and while i cant police all the negligent parents out there, Disney can help by not allowing kids under 18 in them at all.

OP please call member services. please.

Strictly my two cents...

With regard to Diane's situation, my sense is that the greater failing is Disney's lack of chemically treating the hot tub properly. Those things are a cesspools of bacteria and they need to be cared-for properly. Disney knows what sort of audience they attract--kids...teens...adults, etc.

If I were going to follow-up with Disney about a similar situation, that's the approach I would personally take: emphasizing what appears to be a lack of proper care and maintenance on the hot tub.

As for appropriate age for hot tub use, everything I have read only suggest that infants and toddlers age 5 and under are at risk. I have not come across any reputable health professionals who claim that children age 6 should be banned from hot tubs for medical reasons. Parental supervision is suggested, of course.

As for adults-only facilities at Disney resorts--I have no problem with guests offering those suggestions. If there is enough demand, perhaps they will eventually act. But given Disney's track record and target market (families with young children), I suspect you're in for an uphill battle.

Until / unless Disney creates and enforces adults-only facilities, guests who formulate their own expectations are going to be consistently frustrated. Disney doesn't have rigid policies for hot tub use. They do not have established behavioral standards for the so-called "quiet" pools.

Without guidance from resort management, the individual expecting a serene, relaxing environment simply is not...more right...than the tweens wanting to play "Marco Polo" in the pool.

There are adults only sections on Disney Cruise ships, I don't see why one hot tub can't be adults only at a resort. It can be tucked away somewhere where a child isn't as easily to happen upon it.

But on the other hand, just because it's an adults only hot tub, shouldn't mean that you feel free to fonicate in the hot tub. I mean, people still should behave themselves. Some of the above examples are unbelievable and probably would happen with those same people regardless of where they were.

With regards to the OP problem, I would call just to let them know that there might be a problem that needs attention. Sadly, I doubt you were the only one that contracted this from the hot tub, if that's in fact where it came from.

Oh you poor thing.

That said, it certainly can't be linked strictly to children. Strep gets everyone.

Yes, I think I would definately call and let them know. If not because of the children in the hot tub, Disney must not be treating the Hot Tub correctly.

I'm talking mostly about Aulani. While it's a Disney resort, it isn't Disney World or Disney Land. I'm not saying no children in the hot tub either. I'm saying have at least ONE Adults only hot tub for those of us who prefer it.

Thanks for all who responded. Just to clear up a few things... I have never before had this type of female strep infection. The strep part of it is the unusual part. It is mostly linked to things like not cleaning yourself properly or being in contact with the pathogen in some other way. Hot tubs and baths are the most common culprit when everything else is normal. The sad thing is that now that I have had this infection, I will never again be able to go into ANY hot tub without running the risk of getting it again. So, my contacting MS again would be mostly to help them understand what the issue CAN be, and why they should actively address the situation.

As for the chemicals....We were in the hot tub one morning when the cast member came to check the chemicals and add more to the water. At the same time, I noticed a LOT of sand in the bottom of the tub, which mostly comes from people not taking care to wash it off if them come from the beach.

The children who were constantly in the hot tub were NOT there sitting quietly, but were using it as a swimming pool. There was a cast member around part of the time to make sure the kids weren't jumping from one level to the other, but that was usually only in the most crowded part of the day. I did indeed see several "tweens" (8-12 range) jumping from one level to the next and using the hot tub like it was Menahune Bridge water play area. I rarely saw adults in the tub....mostly full of kids.

I am indeed going to contact Member Satisfaction again. Thanks Tim for the suggestion about how the hot tub is chemically treated as well. Last time I contacted MS about this, they did agree with me that there should be an adults only hot tub given the location and given the fact that they have such adult only areas on the cruise ships.

To whomever mentioned Lawanai spa....Yes, it was the ONLY hot tub I was able to be in without children, but I paid $500 for the two of us to enjoy it, and I should be able to do a hot tub at a place like Aulani without paying extra for it.

Who would they be helping, you? Because they certainly wouldn't be helping their business.

Here's the reality: Disney won't be excluding kids from anything unless it has to, like a ride for safety reasons. Because as soon as a family is told their kids can't go in a certain pool or hot tub with age appropriate children (over the age of 4-5), then they're in the business of losing customers--and Disney's only agenda is to get people to come back. So as far as I'm concerned, the notion of "adults" only pools and hot tubs at Disney resorts is implausible.

Hot tubs are a risk for kids both from design and temp. No child under 12 should be in one that is 104 deg, the usual temp. The safe temp is 102 deg for kids and for toddler's, most consider under 100 degrees. Older models can also be a safety hazard with hair getting caught. Hot tubs in general and an infection risk, strep is not the most common and might or might not be related while pseudomonas folliculitis (little bumps or areas where the jets hit) is fairly definitive.

I did indeed contact them again, and per Tim's suggestion, I addressed it from the standpoint of how often and complete the chemical treatment is. I also attached it to my first request and included a synopsis of the response I got from MS and saying I was pleased with that first response, but wanted them to know "the rest of the story" that was unknown at my first contact.

I'll let you know what they say.

I agree, thank you from all of us. And for the poster that said Disney would lose customers if they didn't allow children in a hot tub, so not true. If they can do it successfully on their cruise line, they surely can do it at the resorts. For instance, at the Beach Yacht Club resort, there are three big hot tubs. I would give ANYTHING if one would become all adults only. I'll never forget last year, I was all alone in one once, and two small children, ages 3 and maybe 5, came in to join me. I thought, well certainly Mom and Dad are right behind them? To my shock, I was wrong. Nobody came to watch them. I was livid at the negligence. Other times, there was a boy that incessantly dove to the bottom of the hot tub, over and over again , you guessed it, no parents. I'm a Mom of three grown kids, so I'm not anti children by any means. But this was inexcusable. Please Disney, follow what DCL is so very good at, give us some precious alone time without the little ones all over us at the pools.

Seriously just curious here, but there are plenty of adult only areas on the Disney cruiseships, and plenty of kid friendly areas as well.

I don't see having an area that is adults only as so bad. It certainly doesn't hurt their business on the cruiseships, so why would it at a resort?
