Should we have waited?

We booked the 5/10 Magic sailing out of Galveston in January with a GTY status on 11C for $3k for the 3 of us (DH, me, DD - 10). We were assigned an 11B on deck 5 about 55 days out. Now if I go in to look at the same cruise, I can get a IGT for $2400, a savings of $600! Is it always like this? Is there any way to change to this and see where we end up? The only difference in the 11C and 11B is the deck, so our room can't get any smaller.

No, there is no way. I looked at the prices just now and the room you got for you, DH, and DD is $3,279.15. Did you pay 3K even? If so, look at it as saving $279.

A lot of factors go into when they are placing discounts. I saw the new discounts that came out yesterday for the same cruise. I got a good deal on this same cruise because I waited to get a MIL Discount. Was not offered last week even.

You might call to see. If you had a GTY and they are offering another GTY, they might work with you.

I always watch to see the room categories that start to dissapear. Nothing was going away on this cruise so I waited. Fortunately for me I saved a lot. You saved $279 over the going rate.

See ya on board!!!!!

Have you called DCL to see if they would give you a credit? It's always worth a try! I noticed this sailing has military rates as well so they are obviously trying to sell cabins that are still available.

I'd say to try calling and don't get your heart set on it, but if it happens and you get a refund or credit then awesome!

Let us know what happens

Heather

I always book on board to get the 10% discount. My last cruise (2/15) ended up being KSF so I called DCL and they gave me the KSF discount which saved me about $1200. I lost my onboard credit for booking on my last cruise but that was only $250 so I still came out WAY ahead. The girl I spoke with was very nice and was willing to check the rates before making any changes. Even if they say no, it's worth calling to ask! :-)

As you found, *GT discounts usually come out after the PIF date. These are usually very reduced rates but also carry a lot of restrictions. You will not be able to change your current reservation to a *GT without incurring penalty on the original reservation (essentially - cancel and rebook).

GTY and *GT are very different animals. GTY is a regular reservation where you have selected a category but you allow DCL to assign the exact stateroom; you are allowed to request changes to this reservation. *GT reservations are usually last-minute (after PIF) and carry many restrictions including no changes allowed.

And no, it's not "always" like this.

Disney would much perfer to SELL the ship at the prices they want. And there are some posters who are starting to think that there may not be any "late booking sales" for the Med cruises for example.

Waiting has a risk. If the "Sale" doesn't happen you could wind up being priced out. For example my cabin on the Med cruise is not even available and a comparable class is over $6,000 if I booked today

you will enjoy your cruise very much! As I stated, we are going with you. We just took this same cruise 2/15 if you have any questions.

Thanks for the quick responses! We are excited about the cruise, our last one (11/2011) made us Gold so we're very anxious to be "home" again aboard the Magic. May call them later this afternoon and see if they'll offer any OBC or something. No hopes, but there's always wishes!

Justacruiser - do you remember when the Character Breakfast is for this itenerary? Guess you really l did enjoy yourself if you're going again!

Can't remember when the CB was, we didn't attend. My DD is in her 20's.

We live alot closer to Galveston that Port Canaveral. Also know that this is the last time that this particular cruise will be offered for the next 1.5 years. I like that WDW is provided FREE of charge with the cruise price.

Thanks Justacruiser

Ok. I looked at some navigators but couldn't find it listed, of course, they were small and I could have missed it. Even though this will be DD's third cruise I'm thinking she'll still want to go. Just hoping it's not on the morning we scheduled Palo Brunch.

I love the fact that the cruise is leaving from our home state (even if it does take a 7 hour drive to get there).

The character breakfasts on the Magic/Wonder are the morning after you have eaten in Animator's.

Would appreciate knowing what the response was about offering any OBC. We are in the same position...I wanted to say "boat", but everyone knows it's a ship! We too are on this cruise out of Galveston.

We are joining you on this cruise as well. Just booked it....the military rates are great!

How do the shuttles work coming back from WDW? Do you just grab one at whatever park you are leaving from? We plan to start with Magic Kingdom and I booked that shuttle when I checked in this morning. We plan to hop to HS for the evening. How do we catch a shuttle back to the ship from there? Thanks!

yes you can. There is a shuttle that will run approximately every 30 minutes from there until 30 minutes after the park closes. They will give us a schedule on the morning bus to WDW. MK may be open late and the last bus for our cruise was at 11pm for there.

When you check into the parks, after security, let them know you are on the ship and they have someone let us in. The normal entry folks did not have access to let us in. No big deal. Just letting you know.

Hope this helps

When I asked about the shuttles they told me that you go online and pick which park you want to visit first and pick a time for the shuttle - might want to look into this in case earlier times get booked...

I had an 11C on the Magic on deck 2 in Feb and Deck 5 would have been nicer. Had an awesome time and not complaining but the higher deck would have been nicer also I think you get the split bath too yes? I know I did not and it would have been nice. That said I'd call and see but they may agree but put you in that category and you loose your cabin....
