Odd, normal, or other?

Woman in line ahead of me at the grocery store last night put all her cans and bottles on their sides when loading the belt. Every time the belt advanced, all her stuff rolled all over the place (she had a LOT of canned goods). I can't say I've ever see anyone deliberately put cans on their side before.

DW thought perhaps this was a former checker who found stuff easier to scan that way. Thoughts?

I put soda bottles on their side because otherwise the 2 litres will fall over when the belt abruptly starts or stops.

Yeah , I didn't think anything of it when she did that with her wine because of just what you said. The cans though struck me as odd.

Depends on if this was at Walmart or an other store.

Have to learn to budget somehow. Want the latest video game? Save up. Want a new Beyblade? save up. Want a new Dooney and Burke? Grab the credit card out of DH's wallet...

I do this with wine and soda bottles. Cans and small bottles go upright. The cans would roll, and then the checker has to turn the can to find the barcode. Sitting upright, the checker can pick it up by either the front of the can or by the top.

So, to answer your question---Odd

As a cashier, I preferred items be placed in their most stable position with UPc's facing me so I don't have to hunt for it. For me, any scan time saved by having the cans on their side was lost by the time it took to grab the can and put the UPC towards the scanner.

My DH puts things on the belt by how he wants it bagged. Cold stuff together, etc. do find it odd that someone would put the cans on their sides, though.

I put alike items together on the belt as well because I prefer to bag my own groceries. No, I don't put cans and bottles on their sides on the belt, but I DO put them on their sides inside those plastic bags. Bags stay upright and less likely to topple over that way.

I have never heard of this. I would think rolling around would just shake them up.

This is what I do. I won't even let him empty the cart, this way the bags go in the house the right way - to the freezer, cupboard, laundry room etc...
Yeah, I know

Sounds like this person was too educated to be at Walmart, they knew how to lay a can on its side.

Then you are probably at Whole Foods, not Walmart

What if it canned wine? Does that up the classy factor or not?
