Smile Thumbs up to a great teacher :)

Here are kudos to DD's orchestra teacher. DD has been playing viola since fourth grade and, in a rarity for DIS children, she is not a gifted player... However, she is competent and enjoys playing in the orchestra.

Mrs W, the orchestra leader/teacher is encouraging and positive, but not over the top and she gives the musicians a chance to rise to the occasion, even those less than great players. Last night was the mid-Winter concert. With the 5-6th orchestra, she had several kids change places so they had a chance to lead a section. She spoke about building leaders and how is translate across the curriculum and life.

She had one boy and one duet play solos from a recent competition and DD was given a solo to start a piece. DD got to move to first chair and have a moment to shine.

It is so nice to see a teacher invested in the development of the whole orchestra, not just the top players and by doing that she is encouraging those who might give up to continue and grow. Thanks Mrs W!

That's wonderful! I love excellent teachers!

DS's teacher this year is just amazing. She truly knows each child in her classroom and each of their strengths and weaknesses and she teaches accordingly. She cares deeply about each student and makes sure they all are gently taught to be caring, compassionate, friendly people. I cannot say enough good things about her.

I was in the car with my son and we were talking about how lucky he was to have her this year and he said, "She understands the world." I asked him what he meant, exactly, and he said, "She knows that each person is different and that is the way it's supposed to be." Then yesterday his psychiatrist (he has ADHD and anxiety) asked him if he liked his teacher and why. He said "Because she's good." The doctor said, "She's a good teacher?
And my son said, "No, well, yes, but I meant she's a good person." She truly, truly is.

Shout out to Ms. Birmingham! We love you!
