and? so they already know way to much information on me, yet you want that I should willing give them more?

Op, firmly on your side with this one. I am becoming more and more "grinchy" with the information I give out.
I see no need for stores to have my phone number and address when I return some thing especially when I have a reciept. they didn't need it to take my money?
I see no need for yahoo, google, the dis or anyone else to have my cell phone number. If I lose my password, I'll survive.

I clicked in expecting to see a resignation letter from someone who works from home and was put off my Marissa Meyer's new policy (the answer is no!). I think I'd be inclined to give them a different phone number, not my cell, but one I can access if I need to (maybe my backup office line) like how I have an email address I put in to any request where I think they may later spam me. Do others do that?

Hmm. Google has my cell phone number because of my Droid. And I don't get spam calls or texts.

I have my cell # linked to both my Yahoo and Gmail accounts, as well as my Facebook accounts, and I never get any text spams or calls.

I don't think you can link a landline # to the accounts as someone above suggested because the notifications come as texts, not calls.

The city my ISP says I am located in isn't anywhere close to where I actually am.

It usually comes to within about 20 miles.

Yahoo/ Gmail/ ect only want to use your cell phone number to facilitate faster password resets and to notify you when your account is accessed in a weird location.
Example: this morning in Maryland (home for me) then 2 hours later in China.

Your cellphone number is no more private then your Land line. Currently there is no "whitepages" for cellphones because most cell providers want to charge outside companies to have access to the information. (ever notice the additional fee to provide more detailed info then just the city/state when doing a reverse cell number look up)

The difference marketing wise is, the an auto dialer can not be used on cellphones. So, due to the increased call time and the higher rate of screening calls, most marketing companies don't like calling cell phones.

Currently the your cellphone number can be mapped back to the Rate center which is roughly equivalent to how Land lines are organized in to "cities" by the phone companies.
