We bought small (6 to 12 inch tall) totem poles from each of our stops (probably made in China ) - yep, more "dust catchers" like others have said.

Also a picture frame with a mat outline of the state of Alaska.

Those sound really cute - were these for sale onboard the ship or at one of the ports?

I'm pretty sure if my DD sees them, she'll want a set.

I have 3 favourite souvenirs from the very first DCL Alaskan cruise in May 2011
(1) My DCL Inaugural Alaska blanket with the Wonder on it with all the ports listed - it is on the sofa in our family room and I use it almost every day.
(2) My DCL Alaska totem pole figurine
(3) My Alaska shopping bags that I picked up in Ketchikan (i think they were free with a purchase) - we have to use our own bags at our grocery store and it is so much fun when the cashier sees Alaska on the bag and asks if we went and I can tell them all about how amazing Alaska is.

There were a TON of souvenir shops! I went into a couple, and it would have "Alaskan jewelry" that said, "made in china" on the box. That was one way to tell.

I did end up getting a few things I love!

- Ulu knife and board (actually carved in Alaska),
- a whale tale necklace with a black stone on it (wearing it right now!)
-DH got a mini ulu pocket knife from red dog saloon
- a glass pendant necklace made by the artist in the store

And of course we got some kitschy stuff too

Eta: on the ship we got a travel mug, and an ornament that we love!

I googled this because I was hoping to find a picture, but didn't have any luck. If you get the chance, would you mind posting a pic of the Mickey ones?

I bought a little marble bear in Ketchikan at Alaska Stone Art. The tiny fish in his mouth is made of deer bone. After I got home I starting thinking I should've gotten one for my mom too. (They did excursions but not really much walking to shops due to lung problems.)
So I dug up my receipt and had another one shipped for $10 extra and gave it to her for her birthday in Nov. She got all teary knowing it was from Alaska.

I have a fridge magnet, pins & photo albums that I bought on the ship & some calendars & a Christmas ornament in port but the little bear is my favorite.

Great thread!

It's giving me some good ideas for our forthcoming cruise and thanks for the advice on shopping at locally owned establishments - that's important to us

There's a quilting store in Skagway that sells really cute "blanket toss" pincushions. They have little eskimos in a ring around the pincushion. I bought one for myself and for gifts for all of the crafty people on my gift list.

Definitely going to check those out. My dear friend is a quilter and I know she would use one.

My DD got a $20 jacket. I don't know how to post pics, I'm technilogically challenged. Hers is a simple pink and gray jacket that is nylon on the outside and fleece on the inside. It is good for weather about 30-50 degrees.

My favorite souvenir was an Eskimo Nativity set. I collect Nativity sets and just love this one. It has a piece of white fur (which I am not so thrilled about because it is real rabbit fur, think it could have been just as nice with fake fur), an Eskimo Mary and Joseph and Baby Jesus, an igloo, and a walrus. There might be one more animal like a polar bear but I can't remember off hand. It is a hand made set that is made in Alaska. I got it at the Christmas shop in Ketchikan.
