How do dummy cruises work?

I'm going on the dream this summer and very interested in booking a 7-night fantasy cruise for 2015. I've only booked cruises on dvc points so I have no idea how actually paying for one works LOL.
So how would I go about booking a cruise for 2015? And if anyone knows if I book on board can I still use dvc points to pay for part of the cruise?

I did not use DVC made a 3 night inside room for small deposit. Later converted to what I wanted for the 10% off and OB credit!

Could I do this?

Book Cruise ABC, 3 days, for $500 Interior, on Aug 1, 2014....
for a 10% discount, bringing it down to $450 and only required to pay 10% deposit which is $45.

Then change it 6 months later to Cruise XYZ, 7 days, for $1,000 Interior on September 1, 2015.....
still 10% discount, bringing it to $950 and required 10% deposit which is $95 ($50 more due at changing).

Can someone please tell me if this is correct? I just want to make sure that it doesn't matter the ship/dates/cost/category etc....the 10% discount will still follow your booking trail, right?

Thanks!

I'd be interested to know too. I'd love to be able to take advantage of the savings you get when booking on board but I also know it will be a couple of years before I have time to do it again. I only get so much vacation time and we have other places we want to go too.

That is exactly what I did. I booked a bottom inside room for one person for 3 day cruise. Then I changed it to a 7 day cruise for 2 people. Both my discount and TA's OBC changed to the 7 day cruise.
Note: I also gave them the name of my TA and my TA made sure the dummy booking kept moving forward until I was ready to use it.

Exactly! We always book on board and they give us the cheapest room/sailing so we have the smallest deposit. Then, we just move the res every six months or so until we have the dates/ship/room category we want. The discount stays, you just have to pay the additional money for the deposit if the new res is more expensive than the last.

Also, should a deal for your sailing become available, they will let you compare prices and go with the better deal. That just happened on our 2/15 sailing. We booked a year and a half ago but when the KSF became available, I called and they ran the numbers to see which deal was better. Even though I lost the onboard credit, KSF saved me almost $1200 so I went with that!

Just tell them to book you on the cheapest cruise. You must tell them how many people. They will then book you on a Dec 2014 cruise and your deposit should be $200 or less.

You will keep the 10% discount and get full OBC for future cruise.

The only thing you will have to do is increase your deposit to 10% of the future cruise price when you reschedule it.

If you do this, can you keep the 10% off and the OBB if you end up wanting to book an IGT/OGT/VGT room, or can you only do one or the other?

Another related question. Can I start making small payments on our dummy cruise so that when we pick a cruise the deposit will be taken care of? Last month when I asked for a dummy cruise he gave me Feb.3 2014. So I am going to have to book something soon after 2015 comes out.

Stupid question, but I want to make sure I understand this right before I do it in a few weeks. So if I book 2 rooms for the 6 of us in a Cat 11B on a 3 night sailing on the dream, they will give me 10% off the list price and I would pay that 10% deposit on board. Then when the 2015 dates come out, I should be able to transfer that booking to say a 2015 summer Med cruise (if available) and still get 10% off the list price of whatever 2 rooms I end up picking (provided they are not concierge) and then pay the increase to equal the 10% deposit for the new sailing. Is that correct? You still get the 10% off the rooms either way, right?

Thank you so much for any help because I would love to get the $$ off the two rooms I would need in 2015.

*GT rates require a new booking, so no you could not transfer a OBB to a *GT rate.

Yes, you can make payments and as long as you transfer before the PIF date all deposit+payments will transfer to the new date. Next time, suggest they book the "dummy" for as far out as possible.

Correct! As long as both staterooms remain on the same date, you will continue to receive the OBB benefits for the new date.

You can add people as long as there is availability at the muster station and the kids club (if appropriate).

You cannot add another stateroom that will get OBB benefits. A max of 2 staterooms can be booked onboard for the full OBB benefits and both must remain on the same cruise date to retain the benefits (can't change 1 to cruise A and the other to cruise B).
