The other option is to take the later flight and you and your DW go over to DTD and shop and have lunch.
The problem with the later flights is that she wants to get home sooner than later. The goal is to minimize the time away from home and trim the front end, back end travel time. Thats why we are planning to fly down the am of the cruise and trying for earlier flight home. If I had my way we would do a 7 night cruise but I'm happy enough to convince her of a 4 night vs a 3 night as it is.

How happy will she be if you miss your flight? You would not hear the end of that forever...... If I can't control my own arrival time, I give myself a minimum of 2 hours. That is my experience with 20 years of military service AND being married for 27! Hurry up and wait!

i dont think you would have any issues as long as you disembark right when available. MCO is a direct shot down the 528 from the port. Should only take you a 1/2 at most to get there.

Does it seem reasonable to drive about 3 hrs south to FLL in order to take a 2:30pm flight?

I think it would be more reasonable to rent an onsite rental car when you land at MCO, park it at the Terminal Parking and then you can be on your way to the airport as soon as you walk off the ship. Returning a rental car at MCO is easy; you'll be on your way into the terminal in a matter of seconds.
