best e-reader for cruising with toddler?

I would love to know what is your favorite e-reader that is also good for occupying a toddler? I am thinking I want to be able to read books with built in light and download Disney Jr apps for DD1. This will be my annual gift to myself so a few hundred dollars is ok but not $1000. Thanks!

I have an "old" kindle fire. It goes for like $150 new on amazon. It's awesome for my kids. Children's books, kids apps, MY books - even my library has an app.

It's not as awesome as an iPad - but is like 80% as cool for a fraction of the price.

FYI - fisher price makes a kid tough cover for it too. Really good for avoiding sticky fingers and accidental drops.

Get an iPad, it is just so versatile. You can get a mini or even get a used or refurbished one if you want to save money. DD has a first generation ipad that she gets to use at home and on trips.

I have a nook color and an iPad. My DGS loves my iPad. My DD( his Aunt) has the iPad mini. It's what I'll get when my I replace my iPad.

We also own an iPad (my hubby won one at work). My next tablet will still be a kindle. The iPad is more robust - but seriously not $350 more robust. Plus the smaller size of the Kindle makes it fit in my purse. There is the iPad mini I suppose, but that's even MORE $$$ . Lol.

Go to an office supply or target and try both - sometimes hands on will help your decision.

Kindle Fires because of Free Time . A cheap subscription service that has unlimted kids apps, video and books. PLus you can set limits for each category so they don't have to watch video all day, but you can let them read as much as they want.

Here is more info:

Kindle fire!!! For the win! I'm on one right now. My wife has one and our son. We can keep check on his purchases (all under the same account). My wife must have 13+ books now downloaded, she loves it, imo the display resolution is far better than iPad. There's also Amazon prime, one yearly fee, like 80 bucks, you can watch movies and one free book from the lending library a month and free 2 day shipping on Amazon purchases! Also we rather android based operating system than ios.. oh and the price for the new 8.9" is cheaper than iPad.. 300.. you maybe can find an iPad used for 350..

If kids are using it, you will want a touch screen device so that limits the choices some.

Normally we are Android users as well (in fact my husband is almost completely anti-apple), but we wanted what happened to be best at the time of buying (screen, battery, processor). Also, I happened to have an iPhone so my apps are sharable between the two devices. So he agreed iPad would be best for us.

We got my iPad at Target. They were running a deal where we got a $30 Target card just for buying it there and we used our Target card an got 5% off. Totally worth it. They seem to run those gift card deals often.

If we hadn't gotten an iPad, the other device we considered is a Galaxy Tab by Samsung. MIL got a Galaxy Tab 2 7" for Christmas and loves it. She used to have a regular nook.

We took our iPad with us for DD3. I downloaded a bunch of new apps right before the cruise. It really helped us get through the long dinners with her. It kept her occupied for the most part.

Thank you! You are all so helpful. I am going to check out the Kindle fire info. I searched and saw some refurbished Ipads. Looks promising. Save about $100. Of course Target 5% + $30 back is good too. Hmmmmm

I have also have a new Kindle Fire and love it. The only draw back to not having an iPad is there are not many Disney apps but I have all of those on my iPod touch so the kids play with that too when they want the Disney apps.

definitely a kindle. I also have a nook and my kids enjoy the kindle more and there are more books available on amazon for yourself then on Barnes and noble. My almost 4 year old is really into cooking games right now and I don't think they even offer any of those on the nook.
