When did that change?

If this is true this is one of my reasons for buying direct....they can change the rules at anytime and take away privileges previously available to resale purchasers.

I just looked around, and it was the changes for resale made in March of 2012 that caused that to happen.

Now, from what I understand you can own as little as 25 points direct, and that gets you access, but of course you would have to pay cash apart from those 25 points (if you could even use those for a cruise). And with member cruises as you probably know but others might not, you have to pay it ALL upon booking. There's no deposit and PIF date. It's all paid, right then.

And yes, they can change the rules going forward.

We bought 3 contracts all aboard the Disney Magic. Last November we bought 100 used DVC points through DVC ($80/point) and these used points are treated as new points -- they can be used to cruise, etc. - no restrictions. And we were able to get same use year as our other contracts.

Lucky! People buying resale now are restricted as noted in the previous posts though.

You bought them through DVC, though. That's not resale. So your points are treated differently than if you bought through a place like the Timeshare Store.

Very good point. I missed that. Resale contracts through DVC are direct and subject to all the benefits that are available to all direct buyers.

We enrolled in DVC onboard our first cruise and purchased additional points on another cruise. Very easy and fairly quick.

FWIW, last month, they were offering $500 off and $500 OBC, (or $1000 off actually if you didn't want the OBC) if you got 160points.

I'm not sure they would say they sell resale, either. But there's a reason they have ROFR, and it's to get back points so they can sell them again.

So if I went to my guide and asked him if I could go on the waitlist to buy 100 OKW points, I would then be waiting for them to get 100 OKW points that they exercised ROFR on. Someone else owned those points before, and now I'm buying them, from Disney. Paying more than I could have paid someone else, but it's from Disney so they aren't considered "resale" in terms of the new rules.

This is my understanding of it.

It depends on what you buy. I'm interested in VGC and last I checked it was $130/point direct. It could be more now. This is just to give you an example. Resale outside of Disney is less. New properties often have incentives attached to bring the relative cost down.

Did you do anything special to get 2012 points?

The are selling Animal Kingdom and Aulani at $140 per point.

So around $22,000.00 with closing.
