I did the same thing...resisted for years. I think it's because I'm conditioned to say, "no thank you," when every store I go into offers me their credit card. I finally got the Red debit card once I realized how much I could save on Disney GC.

I get mine at Smith's. I buy one a month with my groceries. It's a great way to save for the cruise.

I could have written the exact post myself.

I buy mine at Kroger and get fuel points which in turn saves me around 5% at the pump.

I have 3 nieces that I am giving $25 GC each for a DCL cruise.

How exactly does that work?
Does each child get the $25 applied to their room key for charging privileges? Can this be the limit?
Can I assume that the parent's room key credit is separate from the child's?

Thanks!

If the parents allow charging privileges, then anything that child charges will show up under her name, but it is on the parents' bill. No, you can't limit charging to just the $25.

Some have reported they can use a gift card directly in the shops, but then the child wouldn't be able to charge other things like smoothies or arcade cards.

They'll figure it out. You're just giving a gift.

Thanks, but it is more than just giving a gift!
If the kids are allowed unlimited charging privileges, the parents will disown me! Plus we are also going on the cruise, so I don't want to give something that could turn out to be a pain.

Just so I understand this, you have the choice of either giving the children charging privileges with no cap, or no charging privileges at all. Is that correct?

I guess I don't understand why children can't be told no or can't be told not to charge something without asking first, but if they can't have that privilege, then just give them the cards and they can use them in the gift shop but no where else. If they want a smoothie or to have their hair braided, they'll have to ask a parent.

My kids had unlimited charging privileges and one charged hair braiding and added a tip after I'd approved it with her (but I wasn't there). They never bought anything in the shops or ordered any drinks, but they could have if they'd wanted to.

I guess I thought that the beauty of the gift cards would be that they could use them wherever they wanted to.
The girls are 9, 9, and 11 so they won't have a parent with them all of the time.
I'll inform my SIL of the plusses and minuses of giving them gift cards.

Thank you

I was thinking about giving my child charging privileges until I read on this board about kids being coerced into buying arcade cards for other children.

Several years ago on the Wonder one of my daughters friends charged so much that she was grounded for the last day of the cruise.

As far as the gift cards I bought a bunch for our cruise and it was no problem adding them to my account. The only "problem" was on the last day of the cruise I went to guest services to ask a question and she looked up my account without asking my name.
