Disney Cruise and Kids Clubs

I found the cruise board but the folks there are very into cruising. I'd love to hear a different perspective from parents on Disney cruises. And specifically the kids' clubs. I talked to one of dd's classmates today. His family cruised on the Fantasy over Christmas break. He said he liked it but did not like the kids' club. He didn't think there was much to do and the only times he had fun was during scheduled activities. I don't expect my kids to stay in the clubs much anyway but I was hoping they would find it sorta fun .

We're scheduled on the Dream for a 4 night cruise.

We did a 5 night cruise last spring on the dream , dd was just 5 and loved every minute of it.... She loved the ocean eels club. We didn't think she would spend that much time there but she did.... We are looking to book a week in 2014.

I went with a 3 yrs old and 11 yrs old. Our group had 8 and 9 yrs olds. Teens LOVED the clubs. Pre-teens too. It was on and off for the 3 yrs old. It depended onwhich couse,or was there, and on which friends.

I think you'll have no issues. It is the perfect age. They have tons of activities, and they give parents pagers, so if there is something, they call you. You'll probably want your 11 yrs old to check himself in and out.

I would first pick a family activity so they meet other kids, then let them there for an hour or 2 just to see.

Ours were 7, 9, and 11 and really enjoyed the clubs, but did not spend an extreme amount of time there. They now have open houses where parents can go in with the kids and play together, too.

My oldest were 9 and 11, and didn't like the clubs, but the younger kids did. Our last cruise was NCL, and my then 14 year old loved the teen club, my 12 year old gave his 10 - 12 club a half hour and left, and my 9 year old tolerated the 6 - 9 year old club. It's been my experience that tweens, especially those who are on the older end of the age range, don't like them as much as the younger kids, or the teens.

My son was 8 when we went and he LOVED the clubs. He even asked to go to dinner with them instead of going with us. He was never bored.

We went on the Magic for 8 nights last July and DD10 loved the clubs. One night she was there until they closed at midnight. She had a lot of fun and made a great friend. Many nights she chose to go to the kid's club instead of the show. There is so much for the kids to do and the counselors were great.

My 4 and 5 year old loved the clubs and wanted to go all the time. We were on the Magic in October.

We cruised on the Dream last June with our 2 kids: DS11 and DD9 at that time. Both kids loved the cruise --- everything about it, except for the clubs. On the first day during the open house hours, we toured the Oceaneer Lab (for my DD) and the Edge (tween club). Although the clubs seemed fun, my kids wanted nothing to do with them for the remainder of the cruise. We checked them in that first night to the Lab so that we could go to the Cove Cafe for an hour to get a coffee drink. You would have thought that we were the worst parents ever - our kids were not happy about it at all. We never made them go back.

I can't honestly tell you why my kids didn't like it. I really think they just wanted to be with us, which was totally fine. I know a lot of kids love those clubs, but not ours. My kids also couldn't stand the security wristband & couldn't wait to take it off.

You'll want to take that particular child's personality and interests into account, and compare those aspects to your own kids, to really decide if his thoughts on the club will be accurate for your kids.

My son and I watched the planning videos over and over, so he knew that there were many many rooms, and that he could wander around and find things to do. I wanted to make sure he didn't just sit in one room, wondering where everyone was, know what I mean?

He had great fun doing activities, but he also had fun just playing. Both with his cousin and even when his cousin wasn't there. The only time he had us paged was when his cousin got bored (he had come up with some scheme wherein they would get us to let them out, then we would magically allow them to go to the arcade, even though they KNEW all the adults had plans during that time and expected the boys to be IN the club). On his own, if a kid he was playing with left, he just found new kids.

Our cousin would probably have a very different review of the club/lab than my son would. Same cruise, same times of being there (almost), but different feelings about it.

My boys were veterans of the WDW kids clubs when we took our first cruise. They were 6 & 9 at the time. They enjoyed the kids clubs on the cruise and still talk about them. The first night we had to drag them out for bed. They are thrilled to be going back this spring.

I was a little concerned about my older son being bored this time as he will be 11. He is into computer games and there are tons available. He is emailing other boys of similar age who will be on the cruise through our disboards cruise meet. And we are making a real effort to talk about activities in the clubs that both boys will like.
