Am I crazy, or is this crazy?

We're having a big windstorm right now -- abrupt gusts around 40-50 mph. Thankfully no rain, nor any forecast for this week. People are losing shingles left and right (and lucky us, looks like ours is the worst of our block so far). And goodness knows what else is going on, b/c sirens have been going by all day.

We walk into our back yard, and with every gust, we can see dozens lifting up. DH half mumbled something about nailing them down, but I told him I'd tie him up before I'd let him up there in these gusts. Nothing we own on this earth is worth that. I know the longer we let the sections flap, the more it will pull up. Still not worth it. Wind is supposed to die down tonight, it can wait. We already have a call into three roofers to come out tomorrow for a quote.

Imagine my surprise when I watched our neighbor (with the four young kids!), climb up on his roof to nail down shingles. I've watched him teeter and totter around, wobbling for balance when a sudden gust hits. I just can't understand why someone would risk their life like that. I know you can't know someone's financial situation -- maybe he's thinking their deductible is really high and they can't afford it right now. But how would his family get by if he was injured or killed over some stupid shingles?!

So am I just the irrationally nervous one here? Am I missing something, or is that just stupid?

I'm with you. There is NO way my DH would be going up there on a day like you are having.

Not worth it in my opinion. I understand the lure to want to prevent damage if possible but honestly, that's not a task to be taken lightly in those conditions. I'd say better safe than sorry.

We're in Hays County -- I'm used to high winds through here, but this is nuts. Lights keep flickering too. Hope you guys stay safe out there. With this drought, I shudder every time a fire engine goes by.

Yep, your neighbor is crazy and you are sane (well, mostly sane, we wouldn't be walking around in the yard with all that debris flying either )

Well, you've got me there. Although if you think that's bad, a neighbor down the street decided to mow his yard. I'm starting to wonder what's in the water out here....

Williamson County here and that is what our wind is doing, as well. There is no way in Hades that I would ever be up on the roof and no way that my husband would be going up there without a fight.

On a side note, do you think it would be wise for us to all come up with a location in Oz to meet up should these gusts continue? I certainly feel like it would be nice to have some people with common interests making the journey to the Emerald City with me.

Sirens going off may indicate a Tornado Warning!

Now that's funny, b/c I just told my friend in Round Rock that my shingles were flying around looking for a witch to land on

Ooops, sorry, I meant police sires It is a clear blue sky here today. We're just getting the wind -- it's the rest of the country that's getting the crazy precip. Guess I should be glad it's not tornado sirens too -- growing up in Texas, when I hear something like that I have a near pavlovian response to grab a mattress and head for the bathroom. Ummmm...that's not nearly as weird as it sounds.

I knew someone who was hit by a branch in a windstorm and didn't survive. No, you are not crazy.

Your neighbor is NUTS!!! I know the thinking (since obviously your husband thought it too!!) but no way would that be happening. I guess I'm lucky in that my DH hates heights and wouldn't be on the roof if you paid him to, so we would just wait it out until everything was said and done and then deal with the aftermath of damage.

High winds are bad enough when you are down low, I can't imagine putting myself in a situation where there is a height issue.
