Hmmm, here is Nikons 1200-1700 lens. No price listed. But it weighs 35 lbs. So yes, a dSLR lens in that range... weighs about the same as my 5-year-old daughter.
Yes, that 1200-1700 is crazy. And I stand corrected, its a fast f/5.6 at 1200mm, too

From: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography...12001700mm.htm

Of course look at the 2000mm white beast at the bottom..and the 6mm fisheye at the bottom right (big saucer extension) good for a 220 degree field of view

Sigma makes some long telephoto lenses. They have an 80mm f/5.6.

A bargain basement $10,000 for the 300-800mm f/5.6 constant aperature.

(Compared to the $90,000 Nikon charged for the 1200-1700...back in 1993)

In the site I posted, they commented that no good photographer would ever buy such a lens (because good photographers generally realize they have to make money from their equipment.). But there may of been some news and governmental agencies that found a way to put it in their budget
