Red face Big pet peeve about recipe sites...

I hate..HATE...on Allrecipes or something similar when people rate the recipe high, 4/5 stars- and then proceed to explain everything they added, changed, and took out of the original recipe!!

It's like I'm reading a recipe for a corn/bean salad and this person gave 5 stars and as I read through her post, she pretty much made a chili by the end of it!

Rate the recipe as it is, not as how you completely changed it!

I know in the grand scheme, blah blah blah.....but in my little scheme, this drives me crazy!

Phew.

Oh me too or the low ratings by people that have yet to even try the recipe with the review of "I don't like pickles so this can't be good"
Real helpful.

I agree. With some of the recipes, I can see "I added extra garlic because it was a little bland" or "I doubled the amount of liquid because it was too dry"...fair and reasonable, good tips for people to know. But when they change almost all the ingredients, the cooking method, and essentially turn it into a totally different dish... When I read the reviews, I want to know how it is AS given...if it sounds good, I'll make it once, then experiement with it the next time based on my own and my family's preferences.

That drives me crazy too!! I tend to just skip those reviews and try to find the ones where somone made the actual recipe as is. It is very hard to find that though, everyone wants to change it up and add their own seasonings, etc.

I don't necessarily mind when people post reviews of an modified recipe. I am a really picky eater and I see some recipes where I would like everything but one or two ingredients and sometimes I will come across reviews that state they omitted something I don't like and what they added in to replace it.

That's hilarious! I don't know what's funnier; the fact that someone posted a recipe for ice cubes or the comments!

When I saw the title of your post, I thought of this very thing before I opened the thread. I don't understand it either, they should just post their own recipe and can say it was inspired by the first one but at a certain point, it just becomes something else.

I see that all the time on foodnetwork.com ~ it does bug me too

Sometimes though I find the substitution suggestions helpful~ but not to the point of practically dissecting the recipe ! Ugh

I *always* change/add ingredients to recipes that I search for online, then basically make my own recipes. I just like to get ideas. But I *don't* post reviews to that effect.

This post serves as a bookmark for me so I can read all those comments when I have time later.

ETA: I use AllRecipes a LOT and I enjoy reading the changes, and often use the modifications.

Sure, I can see people trying the changes...but when you rate a recipe 5 stars and then post all the changes, you're actually rating your recipe 5 stars, not the original one! And I'll never know if yours is good, until someone rates it, but makes their own changes so their rating doesn't count....a vicious cycle!

Ah, I guessed the pet peeve before I opened the thread. That's one of mine, too.

I don't mind when they change something small, like "I didn't have cooking sherry, so I substituted beef broth," or "I thought it was too dry, so I doubled the sauce." I will often follow those recommendations, especially if the same recommended change has been suggested by several reviewers.

However, there are also sometimes where they change the whole recipe, then "review" what they made. Whether they liked it or hated it, it's unhelpful because it wasn't the recipe that was listed.

The ice cube recipe reviews are hilarious! Thanks for posting that!
