New hot water heater--do you have to run water for a while?

I got a new hot water heater today, and the hot water has a funny smell now. I imagine that there's some stuff in the new heater, so should I run the hot water for a while to see if the smell will go away? How long? It's a 50 gallon hot water heater, so I don't want to run a whole 50 gallons if I don't have to!

Run it for aprox 20 min then give it a week if the smell is still there you may need new Ando rods you may need them switched to aluminum ones.

It's fine now! I ran it for a long time, and then the smell was gone. Thanks!
