Tipping on Take Out

I just saw on the Today Show that Drew Brees is under fire for tipping only $3 on a Chinese take out order in California.

Ummmmm, is that a regional thing? I live in NY and have never tipped on take out nor do I know anybody who does. I didn't know it was expected at all.

So, do you tip on take out? If so how much.

Now I am just curious.

This is interesting as I was just thinking about this.
For me it depends. It depends on the place, the person helping me etc. For example, if I go to a restaurant (that has traditional wait staff and/or bar staff) and I get take out I always tip based on what I order. 1-2 meals take out would normally be 3-5 dollars (or more) depending on the place.
A strictly take out place I tip about a $1 per item (pizza place, Chinese etc.). If I ask for anything special order I usually add a couple of dollars. If the person is especially helpful when I pick up I will give more.
Ice cream places, coffee shops etc I usually stick a dollar in the tip cup/ bucket etc.
Most small restaurants/ take out places I also always try to pay in cash rather than use a card.
I live in MA.

I almost included who he was but didn't.

He's a quarterback for the New Orleans Saints.

No, I don't tip at all when I'm picking up my food. I do tip delivery guys but I have had food delivered exactly once since 2001.

My family gets take out at least once a week (pizza, Chinese, greek, burgers etc.) and it has NEVER dawned on us to tip. We have never seen others do it either so I think that's why this is blowing me away.

Personally, I am a believer of its your job do it and if you do a good job I will tip you anyway but still I just can't imagine tipping on take out.

we have always tipped on take-out if we get it from a normal sit-down place like Texas Roadhouse or Applebees. We have never tipped on Chinese take-out because its a carry-out place. My DD works at a pizza place and she was surprised how many people tip on carry-out pizzas. I think its people who know that the waitstaff gets less than minimum wage at her place that leave tips.

I don't tip on take out. I don't get delivery either. This is absurd!

Now did he pick it up or did he have it delivered?

I've tipped twice on takeout and it has only been at a small mom and pop local restaurant. I usually do not tip and order mostly from chains like TGI, Applebee's, etc...

So who found out how much he tipped? Did the "server" complain? What a brat! I'd be more likely to boycott the restaurant than judge Drew Brees on this...

A couple of years ago I was travelling with a friend and we stopped at an Olive Garden and got take out to bring back to the hotel. She tipped and I did not. We got into a discussion of if it was necessary to tip or not. I started tipping a couple of dollars after that. She made me feel bad.

I will follow this thread closely to see how others feel.

I heard this on the Elvis Duran radio show a few weeks back, and felt a little sick. Supposedly, a woman got on who works take-out, and she said it was much harder to pack up the food than to just deliver it to a table.

BUT, when I tip deliverers, I'm not tipping the person packing up the food, I'm tipping for the guy who has to come all the way out to deliver it to me.

And when I tip a waitress, I'm tipping her for delivering the food and keeping my drinks refilled and bringing the check and all that other stuff.

I don't tip someone for packing up my food. That should be included in the cost of the food. Should I also tip the cook, too? The bus boy?

Really. Stop the madness.

We will tip for deliveries of pizza, hoagies, etc. but I have never tipped when I have called for an order and picked it up. My thought is the tip is going to the delivery person, not the person making the food. Sometimes the driver is delivering in rain, or snow, etc. and deserves the tip. Or sometimes he deserves a tip because I'm too tires from work to cook
