Charged for Taking Stateroom Item But Didn't!

Has anyone else been charged for taking a stateroom item but didn't actually take it? This had never happened to me before until my most recent (7th) Disney cruise last month. When checking my CC statement after getting home, there were 2 'DCL shipboard charges' items. One was the same amount that was on my printed statement I got on the last morning of the cruise, no issue there. But the other was a charge of an even $10. I asked my TA to inquire with DCL about what it was, and she asked if I had taken the laundry bag, as that is typically a $10 charge. I told her no I hadn't, so she forwarded me request to DCL. A week later, I got an email directly from DCL stating that their records did indicate that the stateroom laundry bag was missing when I debarked so they charged. I asked my TA to respond to them by saying I definitely didn't take it- in fact I don't even remember seeing one in the room on this trip. My guess is the previous occupants took it. I can't say 100% but I really dont recall seeing the bag anywhere in the room.

In any event, my TA confirmed with me that DCL said they will reverse the charge, so I guess they didnt give her a hard time about it, but still. I'm wondering how often does this happen, and what is the system they have in place for this? I understand the need for inventory control but they need to A) have a better way of making sure the right guest is the one who is charged, and B)I would like to have a list of items in the room to "check for" on the 1st day to make sure they are all there, that way I don't have to worry about issues and refunds upon getting home. Has this happened to anyone else?

We sailed the Wonder last month for the first time (we have done the Magic several times before).
We did have the red pillow on our bed. We never had one on the Magic.

But anyway, One day we came back to our room and there was a card on the bed saying that be sure to check your belongings before you leave the ship and make sure you didn't take anything that was meant to be left in the stateroom.

I had never seen this before and was a bit surprised.
Is it because of the popularity of those red pillows or is something new since Sept.?

I heard all kinds of things were walking off the ship on the maiden voyage of the Dream. Don't know if it included the red pillows but I do know you get a card in your room now asking you not to take stuff. If you take the red pillow with the embroidery on it, the charge is about $200.

I did not see any cards saying not to take anything. Even if I had gotten the card, it wouldnt have mattered because I wasn't going to take anything and it didnt list the items. If it had listed the items I would have made sure they were all there before I debarked. I remember seeing the laundry bag on previous cruises but there wasnt one that I recall in this room and I didnt bother questioning it because I wasnt doing any laundry. Now I know better and will make sure it is there on the 1st day; but I wish I knew what else to look for and make sure its all there. It is a shame they are not accurate with charging the correct guests because although it was not difficult to get my charge reversed, it still leaves a bad taste in your mouth. If they are going to do inventory control they need to do it accurately.

We found one of these cards on our bed last week on the Wonder. I didn't even take the postcards that were in the desk drawer fearing a $10 charge! I'm sure they've had a LOT of items walk off the ships. Unfortunately, a few bad apples make everyone suspect.

I heard that too -- butter knives from AP, the red pillows, even signs in public areas.

I think that's why they now sell the knives and pillows in the shop, so they can set a price for missing items.

Last week while we were there, we got that little folding card on our bed that said not to take any items out of the room. I thought that was a little weird.

I kept looking around the room to see if we had packed anything by mistake. We didn't. I guess maybe they just put them in all the staterooms now?

Whenever we check in with DVC, I check the inventory list and make sure we have all the items that are supposed to be in the unit - the right number of glasses, plates, silverware, etc. What is typically missing are things like cutting boards and pot holders. But I always call housekeeping and give them a list of items that are not there at housekeeping so we won't get charged for them being missing.

Anyway, we haven't sailed with DCL since 2011 and this thread makes me wonder if there's a list of what those items are that belong to the stateroom that they will charge you for if they are missing - so that as good DISers, we can make sure that first of all, the items are in the cabins to beging with, and then we know to be sure those items are still present and accounted for when we leave. The laundry bags are new to us. As are the red pillows.

I wouldn't be afraid to take the postcards because they are there for our use.

Oh! I had a charge on my Disney visa for $10 after our Sept fantasy cruise- had no idea what it was and disputed it with our credit card- got an immediate credit. I wonder if it was a mischarged item? We did get the "don't take anything" card, and we didn't take anything---

On a separate note, we got charged $349 from shutters and Disney accounting is investigating- didn't buy any photos-- hope they fix that!!!

I'm sorry if you misunderstood me. I wasn't speaking to you personally. I was just asking in general about the cards.
I'm sure you didn't want anything that wasn't yours to begin with.

I don't know why anyone would want that used red pillow. Ewwww..

Oh no problem at all! I wasn't bothered that you said about the card, I just found it interesting because it seems to support my theory that they don't have a very good inventory control process in place, if they are leaving the cards for some and not others and charging the wrong people for removing items.
