I know it is still done in Japan, the $16 sounds about right. Settings I'm reasonably sure start in that range, but can go higher.

I assume it is done in the other location(s) still also--haven't heard that it stopped.

The ceremony for the pick a pearl in Japan was really neat. My daughter (11yo) enjoyed selecting her oyster and got a large pearl. She didn't want it in a setting so we got the "sand and bottle" option they had ($5 or so if I remember correctly.)

My daughters did pick a pearl two weeks ago and loved it!

The pearl was about $17. They each wanted a necklace charm to put the pearl in, which were $29.99 each. They are shaped like little sea shells with the pearl in the middle. Necklace chains are not included, so I had to purchase those as well, which cost $15 each.

Overall, these added up to be more expensive than I planned, but my girls love their necklaces. My older daughter, 8, got a rare blue pearl, which the woman doing our pearl ceremony made a big deal about. People kept coming up to congratulate her. It was a lot of fun and I would do it again!

I second the earlier post about getting a pearl cage off Ebay! I bought one for $5-8 or so, and it was shaped like Cinderella's carriage - so cute! My DD did the pearl ceremony in Japan - cost about $16 and was great fun. It was a wonderful memento of the trip.

My kids all did pick a pearl in Japan quite a few years ago, and we had them set in a necklace for DW for Mother's Day. My DD did it 2 more times, once at Epcot and once at DTD. The "ceremony" in Japan was definitely more fun, but the CM's at the DTD location were really great, too. DD used a pearl cage from Ebay just like previous posters have mentioned.

I had planned on doing this with my daughter in 2011 (she was 4) but she decided to fall asleep in the stroller. I did it anyways I picked an oyster that had twin pearls! They did make a big deal over it which kind of is embarrassing for an adult but it drew a big crowd who also started picking oysters ( there was no one at the booth before I picked).. I still have the pearls...never had them set in anything, but this year I'm hopind daughter stays awake and also picks a good oyster

Just did it 2 weeks ago with my daughter. It was our third time . It is so much fun and a great tradition for us . Each year she always picks the bigger pearl and she loves that! Last year she got a 7 3/4 blue pearl . I was totally jealous and we had it set in a regular cage for around 20. This year we had her pearl set in a sterling silver ring for 25.00. Worth every penny! Great memories !
