My salon changed their policy last March or so. They will allow you to leave a tip on the credit but for a $1 extra. (You leave $20 tip, stylist gets $19). I used to never carry cash but I have to make sure I have it available for when I get my hair done.

The salon I go to is like a PP, cash or check, made payable to the stylist, only. I tip only for the service.

A lot of small businesses have been hit hard by the continuing economic downturn and are looking to cut costs whatever way they can.

I have posted before that we have had issues at my work with those who don't carry cash, or think to get a cash advance getting stuck out in the middle of nowhere at midnight and needing cash for gasoline, or food. or to get chains installed in the snow, and not having the cash.

But I do think there is some merit to the thought that some who worked in tip positions want to make sure there is no paper trail of their tips because they don't report them on their taxes.

My salon changed to this too. But they have an atm right there. If I've forgotten my cash, I'll pay the fee.

I tip about 33% too. It takes her longer to blow out my hair than it does for her to cut it. The joys of having over 2 feet of hair.

I have been to salons that do that. I just don't tip them if I am BRAND new and I didn't know. Sorry...

Oh and I would only tip on the service and not the products either. You already pay a markup on the products.

I will make sure to ask the salon when I make my appts. today just to be prepared. I like my salon I go to now and I would not want to stiff my hairdresser! I HATE being ill prepared for stuff like that.

I used to cashier at a restaurant and we would give the servers their cc tips in cash at the end of their shift. This means the restaurant had to pay the cc fees on the tips because the server received the full amount of the tip before fees. I would imagine it works that way anywhere so the salon probably doesn't want to have to pay the fees on the tips.

I have tipped 50% on my hair before. I have long super thick hair, I've had a stylist work 3 straight hours (and not work on any other clients) on coloring and cutting my hair and only charge me $120-150 bucks. Seems wrong to me to only tip 20% in that situation.

The salon I go to asks for cash tips too.

Am I being too cheap? My haircuts are $35, and I tip $7.

I got my hair colored and cut this afternoon. I was able to put the tip on my debit card, no problem.

THat's the exact price for me and that's what I leave as a tip, so I hope it's ok!

FWIW, my salon is 2 people only and they do have a machine that you can run the card through but I always bring my checkbook so she doesn't have to pay the fees. It's one of 3 places that I actually write checks to these days.

That's exactly 20% - not cheap at all.

My salon stopped taking tips on the CC/Debit on Jan 1, 2012. It has been over a year. I go there....about 5 times a month....and I still forget sometimes.

It's because of the fees they are charged from the bank. I told one of the girls who does my services she should get a SQUARE for free so clients could put their tips on it. I know they still have to pay a fee, but some (most) people don't come back with cash.
