2 Platinum members got sticker shock from DCL

So we were so looking forward to Europe 2014... Wanted to do the 12 day Europe; that is an incredible cruise. Wow..
That's some serious money!!

Don't get me wrong, we have cruised some of the longer cruises with DCL, but didn't think it was going to be that much!

Time to review options.

Price is similar to when we did the 11 night in 2010.

We moved a 12 night Europe from 2013 to 2014 this summer. Same category room -- similar but not identical ports. Cost went up $4k. Sticker shock indeed!!!

Europe has always been a pricy cruise with DCL. And for the amount of time that we would spend on board, we just don't feel it's worth it. (We always justify the higher cost with the service onboard; but for usually double the price of a Royal Caribbean Europe cruise and just basically using the ship as a floating hotel, can't justify sailing any of the European DCL itineraries!)

So after 30 DCL cruises, the one destination we've never sailed with DCL is Europe. When they announce that they are going to Europe, we just check out the transatlantic cruises and they have always been a great value (shhh don't tell DCL) and very enjoyable vacations.

In a few short years, our DDs will both be in college and then (once we've paid for THAT) we will be on all the off-season cruises we've always wanted to be on, including a transatlantic, a Panama Canal, Hawaii and the Southern Caribbean. But until then, we are locked into the big travel times and destinations....and we are devoted DCL cruisers.

I think it depends on which cruise - We also had a 2013 Med cruise booked that we moved to 2014. Couldn't do the exact itinerary again, but the June 14 repo was the closest (I really want to do Italy - never been there before).

It turned out to be several thousand $$$ cheaper for the same category! We are VERY excited!!!!

But I think it was in part because we switched from a mid-July sailing to a mid-June sailing.

We booked today the 12night July 14th 2014 cruise. It was about the same cost as the June 2013 12 night but with new ports. Total cost for 3 for a cat 9b using 10%discount $7450.

I realize that most of this board is super super loyal to DCL, but honestly there are great cruises on other lines, too. We have been on 9 cruises on 4 other lines and are looking forward to our first DCL cruise this April. DCL is often SO much more expensive -- interested to see the difference.

We booked the 9/6/14 WBTA 14-night cruise from Barcelona to San Juan. 2 adults in a cat 5A was a total of 456 DVC points, or $3,256.44. That seemed like a really good deal. Now getting to Barcelona... that's pricey!

Told my hubby earlier this week that I'd never book anything where I had to fly into Barcelona because the cheapest I've ever found round trip airfare from here is $1600. Each. He laughed and reminded me that travel in Europe can be tweeked....like fly into a different, less expensive city and take a train to where you want to go. Sounds good in theory but I haven't really looked at the cost comparison. Just thought I'd mention it. Even if you could add the train plus a hotel for a day or 2 for the same as the Barcelona flight, it adds some bonus time to the adventure, right?

given the prices, and the number of ships that sail in europe (from all the various alternative cruise lines), i'm betting they'll have a lot of space available and will drop prices at the last minute ...

Another tip I saw was to find the cheapest airfare city in the US to your European city and then book a domestic flight to that city from your city. So say you live in St. Louis and need to go to Barcelona and there is a special from Chicago to Barcelona. Book that, and then a separate ticket from St. Louis to Chicago.
