Safe saying "No" when paying rental with VISA?
Hi everyone,
The Delta Points blog has a good post regarding rental car insurance coverage when paying with a Visa card: Are you really “safe” saying NO to extra rental car insurance when paying with VISA? http://boardingarea.com/blogs/deltap...are-the-facts/ I think this is worth a read, since as a community we generally race to the bottom price, hoping we are covered, at least in part, by our credit card. There are provisions we should all be aware of. The info may be "old hat" for some, but a refresher for all is always a good thing. In addition, Rene (DeltaPoints) has promised additional segments, including the American Express coverage, which I personally enjoy using. Rental Car coverage is one topic that pops up every now and then, so I think the blog post can get some questions out of the way. Enjoy! |

You need to see that you have collision or whatever insurance is needed on yourself (on a car you have back at home) or need to see that your particular Visa card offers rental car insurance.
Also most rental companies charge you for extra days if the car got damaged and sat in the repair shop (called loss of use). Some credit cards cover this, some do not. Almost all rental companies do not charge you for loss of use if you say yes to their coverage. Saying yes or no to the rental company's own coverage is separate and independent from using that credit card to get miles or reward points.

Some people think you only have rental collision coverage if you have collision coverage on your personal policy. That's not generally true for NY residents http://www.dfs.ny.gov/insurance/auto/autorent.htm I note that VISA coverage isn't applicable to vans which seat more then 8, including the driver. |
