If you live in Western NY...

Do grocery stores (Tops, Wegmans) or Walmart sell sponge candy?

I'm a former WNYer and love me some sponge candy. DH is up there right now and I asked him to look for it, but he's not very good at shopping. I figured with Valentine's Day being this week maybe some grocery stores had it, even if they don't normally carry it.

Yes, both Tops and Wegmans have sponge candy in their bulk foods section. I love biting off the chocolate first, then eating the sponge last.

They carry it year round.

Already answered, but yes they do. You can buy from bulk at most stores.

Yep, they also carry it at some of the independent chocolate stores like Parkside.

In the cold months when I visit family in the Rochester area I always load up on Sponge Candy. At least 3 lbs to take home and slowly savor. Milk chocolate and dark chocolate. We go to Wegman's, to the bulk foods section. Not sure about Topps. I presume Wegman's doesn't have it in the summer months because it withers in the summer heat.

Darn, DH was just at Tops this afternoon. I told him to look for boxes near Valentine displays. Never thought they'd have it in the bulk section.

I used to be the bulk foods manager at Bells in East Aurora back in the early 90's and we never had sponge candy. I remember we all used to eat the cashews and cheese popcorn though.

This place has sponge candy:

www.wahlscandies.com

My husband is from the Buffalo area and I order chocolate eggs (not sponge candy) from them every year.

I never realized sponge candy was a local thing. I assumed you could get it everywhere.

Wow, we have real wings AND sponge candy. And now, it seems Buffalo has mild winters too!

And beef on weck, loganberry, Bison chip dip, Sahlen's hot dogs and Chiavetta's chicken bbq. I can't find good subs or pizza down here either. I miss a lot of stuff about WNY, but weather isn't one of them.

Bells, that brings back some memories.

I've noticed the past few times we've had sponge candy it had too thick of a layer of chocolate and not enough sponge for my liking. I do love the sponge candy though.

I missed it so much that I've started making a reasonable facsimile with deli roast beef and putting salt and caraway seeds on bakery rolls. Nothing will beat Eckl's in Orchard Park, but it's not bad.
