Question Med Cruise Tax ?

Hi there,

As many of found out to our disgust, the Spanish government ask DCL to impose a 20% tax on services and purchases. In the 2010 summer cruise season no tax was imposed. Does anyone know if this tax is being imposed this coming season.

Probably. It depends on whether all the ports that DCL is going to are part of the European Union.

They didn't have the VAT on the cruises in 2010 because one of the ports wasn't a part of the European Union.

Croatia is not in the Euro zone so since they port there they only will charge the VAT while in port for items like spa services etc. In 2010 the stop in Tunisia qualified so no VAT tax was charged for the majority of items. In 2007 we had to pay on all purchases since we did not port outside the Euro zone. But you do pay a "carbon tax" on your flight in and out of the Euro zone which is about $10.00 a head. If you collect your receipts at the airport you can fill out forms and get a refund for all the tax paid while you visit.

So what would this tax cover? Only purchases made while the ship is in port?

I've had a surf around and seems that our cruise (all EU ports) will be subject to the VAT charges. It looks like food and drink is 4% with products and services at 21%. So the CD and pictures package we had planned to buy will now cost $604. As EU citizens we will not be able to claim the VAT back.

VAT on Med cruise 2011

The VAT was imposed on our 2011 DCL cruise too. At that time I started a thread about it here, maybe it is still informative in the current situation.

For this year, Turkey is not part of the EU. I don't know about others.

On the Greece trip Turkey is a non-E.U. country and Venice trip Croatia is a non-E.U. contry so both qualify so the VAT tax can be waived. Spain is in such poor financial shape than DCL may agree to charge the tax on items bought in territorial waters. I am only speculating. One thing I learned years ago when going to Europe that the "tip" when you dine in a restraunt is usually included and will be listed on the bill. The locals LOVE the travel people for, like me, include a tip on the total not knowing that the tip was already there.

I just pulled out my 2010 onboard bill and the excursions listed was just the total price as listed and no tax was listed on each excursion. That is not to say that the VAT tax was not already incorporated into the overall price paid per person. Also I noticed that no VAT tax was not charged for Shutters purchases for usually Shutters is closed while in port so that makes sense.

Thank you for the link. I never even thought of having a VAT tax, but it makes sense.
