Hello my fellow disers,
I need your help - we are going to be on the Magic this summer and will need to access the internet at least once a day. What is the best way to do this! Do we bring a laptop and pay for wifi (is there wifi) or do we just use the computers there! And does anyone has an idea of the charges? We have been on the Magic before but never had to use the internet! I just need to budget for that as well. Thank you in advance for your help

You can bring your own laptop or use the ones in the little computer-cubby. From DCL's site:

Example Rates for Internet and Computer Services
For sailings less than 7-nights:

Internet / Wireless Internet Access Pay as you go - $0.75 per minute
50 min for $27.50 ($.55 per minute)
100 min for $40 ($.40 per minute)
250 min for $75 ($.30 per minute)
For sailings 7-nights or longer:

Internet /Wireless Internet Access Pay as you go - $0.75 per minute
100 min for $55.00 ($.55 per minute)
250 min for $100 ($.40 per minute)
500 min for $150 ($.30 per minute)
Printing $0.25 per page

It is incredibly slow and not always reliable.

Don't remember the charges, I am sure someone else can let you know that but if you are on the Magic this summer, that means you are going to be in Europe. I would suggest on port days that you seek out a cafe or a Starbucks that with the price of a coffee you can get the internet for free. That is what I have done after initially trying to use the internet on board ship. It is VERY slow, as I recall very expensive and was not always working. It was quite frustrating.

The same goes with phones for wifi, for that matter. Do those work at the same speed?

All Internet service on the ship is connected via satellite link for obvious reasons and all of that service is subject to the same limitations. There will be periods of time when the ship is out of position relative to the satellites and there is no Internet service available. When service is available download line speeds are marginally acceptable, up load speeds are very slow. The biggest issue is that every packet of data has to go all the way up into orbit and back down to earth to get from wherever it's coming from to your device (and vice versa), so "latency" is horrendous (and will continue to be on satellite connections until that pesky speed-of-light barrier is crossed).

I'm going to ask my Concierge host what they can do about that. I figure I paid good money for this trip... they should be able to bend the laws of physics for me.

Not really. The best benefit of using an iPad is that you can do it while sitting in the Cove Cafe with a "coffee" relaxing. Or in your stateroom watching a movie, snacking, with your feet up on the table. If it is really slow (and sometimes it's painfully slow), at least you can still feel like you're on vacation.

When is the best time to buy a WiFi plan? Is this something can be done when you book? When you pre-pay your grats? Also, if I were to buy 100 min, how do I keep track of how much I've used? Also, what if I were to buy 100 min and both myself and my son wanted to use our iphones in our SR to, say.....update our Facebook status, at the same time? Would this be possible?

Thank you for the tip - we are going to Europe and I do like the idea of seating at a cafe and using the wifi with a nice cup of coffee. Great tip, thanks again
